Opponent theory of motivation

The basic idea behind opponent-process theory is that when a

person receives a stimulus that elicits an immediate positive or
negative emotional reaction, two things occur:-

 First: the immediate positive (or negative) emotional reaction

is felt.
 Second: a second emotional reaction occur that has a feeling
opposite to that initially experienced.
Priming

It is a concept closely related to opponent-process theory. Priming

occurs when a small amount of exposure to stimulus (e.g. food,
playing video game, watching TV) leads to an increased drive to be
in the presence of the stimulus.

 The effect of priming may influence consumers in their

consumption of drugs like cocaine.
 Providing free samples to consumers is a classic example of
priming e.g. marketers distribute free samples of hair shampoo
sachets.
Difference between attitude and
belief
 Attitude: - An attitude is the way a person expresses or applies
their beliefs and values, and is expressed through words and
behavior.

 The definition of an attitude is a way of feeling or acting toward

a person, thing or situation.

 Belief - Beliefs consist of very large number of mental or

verbal statements i.e. “I believe.......” that represent a person’s
particular knowledge and assessment of something - another
person, product, a brand, and a store.
 Belief sees it as a mental representation of an attitude
positively oriented towards the likelihood of something
being true.
 The term "belief" to refer to personal attitudes associated
with true or false ideas and concepts.
