    Reported speech is used to report what someone said either directly by using quotation marks or indirectly by changing verb tenses and substituting pronouns. Direct speech reports the exact words spoken while indirect speech changes the context to the past tense. Examples are given of direct speech using quotation marks and indirect speech which changes "I am ill" to "he said that he was ill" and "How old are you?" to "the man asked how old I/she/he was."

    Direct speech is a report of the exact is usually used to talk about the past, we normally
    words used by a speaker change the tense of the words spoken. We use
    reporting verbs like 'say', 'tell', 'ask', and we may use
    the word 'that' to introduce the reported words.
