• Whirlpool Corporation is the world’s leading


manufacturer and marketer of major home appliances
.
• The company manufactures in 13 countries on 4
continents namely :-- Canada, United States, Mexico,
Argentina, Brazil, Slovakia, Germany, Sweden,
France, Italy, South Africa, China and India and
markets products in more than 170 countries
• Whirlpool was founded in 1911.
• Louis Upton founded the Upton Machine in this year
to produce motor-driven wringer washers.

• The company's first major order for 100 washing


machines came almost immediately. A problem arose
when a cast-iron gear in the transmission failed — in
every single machine. Upon learning of the issue, Lou
Upton replaced the defective parts with a new cut-
steel gear. Impressed with the fledgling company's
business ethics, the customer doubled its order to 200
washing machines
• In October 1960, Whirlpool received a government
contract to design and build America’s first
experimental space kitchen. The kitchen included a
miniature thermoelectric refrigerator, freezer, three-
cavity oven, self-heated water system, storage space
for food and disposal units for both dry and wet waste.
This was the first attempt by appliance engineers to
cope with the problems of zero gravity, and a number
of innovative solutions were developed. There work
helped build public knowledge of and confidence in
the space effort. Whirlpool continued working with the
government to develop food and equipment for space
travel, pioneering the development of food, waste
management and personal hygiene systems used in all
of NASA’s Gemini, Apollo and Skylab missions.

They began growing there international
business, expanding into Mexico. They also
built a manufacturing plant in Pondicherry,
India, and began manufacturing and marketing
appliances throughout Europe. In 1986, they
purchased the KitchenAid division of Dart and
Kraft, allowing them to continue the excellent
tradition of major and countertop appliances
for which KitchenAid is known
Whirlpool is also the principal supplier
to Searo, Roebuck and company of many
major home appliances marketed under the
Kenmore brand names.

• One such innovative product that Whirlpool
now offers is the Whirlpool HEPA filter air
purifier. Whirlpool’s Energy Star Qualified air
purifiers feature charcoal pre-filters to
trap odors, True HEPA filters to remove
99.97% of particulate matter, and quiet
operation.
• After acquiring the Maytag Corporation on
March 31, 2006, Whirlpool Corporation
became "the largest home appliance maker in
the world", prior to which Electrolux was the
largest home appliance maker in the world.
• Net income us$418 million in 2008.
• The marketing strategy of Whirlpool is market
driven, and to gain competitive advantage, this
company is leveraging a global presence in
various regional markets. They also concern
market mix of the company that differs of each
country. They segmented the market by regional
because almost every country has unique
preferences that are influenced by environment
condition, custom, economic condition, etc.
• Look for 2009 revenue to decline, but by about
4-7%, not at a double-digit decline rate.
Another positive: Whirlpool's well-known
brands and distribution network positions the
company to increase market share in emerging
markets, once global growth resumes.
• Their future product will be designs as an
environmental friendly product in accordance
to customer expectations.
