 Shorebase Definition
A shore base or supply base is the onshore logistics hub for any
offshore E&P operation, be it seismic, drilling, pipeline, platform
installation or production operations.

It is the onshore support facility that receives and acts as a

transshipment point for all tools, equipment, mud, cement,
personnel, consumables, water, fuel, etc.

It is also a communications, scheduling and dispatching centre for

the offshore supply vessels

 Deepwater Shorebase Requirements

• Quay of sufficient length and draft

• Quayside storage for the mob/demob of goods coming on or off
supply vessels.
• Laydown yard space for the temporary storage of containers,
tubulars, and other oilfield equipment that moves on and off
supply vessels
• Washbay for pipe cleaning
• Warehousing (may be covered or uncovered, with or without
shelving, climate controlled, etc).

 Deepwater Shorebase Requirements
• Offices for shore base staff
• Heavy lift equipment (forklifts, cranes, pipe handlers, etc).
• Labour (stevedores and other port labour as well as equipment
operators).
• Roadways of sufficient quality
• Access to potable water, drill water, fuel (pipe, trucks, barge, etc)
• Access to electrical power of required voltage
• Sufficient security including fencing, guard booths, CCTV, etc.
• Sufficient parking for staff and visitors.

 Opportunities for T&T
• Guyana and Suriname currently have major limitations to provide
bases for deepwater operations in comparison to T&T:

1. Severe Draft restriction

2. Lack of heavy lift equipment
3. Lack of industrial port infrastructure
4. Lack of oil and gas suppliers
5. Lack of commercial shipping lines and air freight routes

 Conclusions
• The region has unprecedented deepwater exploration
• All deepwater drilling in Guyana, Suriname, French
Guiana, etc will need Trinidad bases for the foreseeable
future.
• A shorebase is an integral part of any offshore operation.
• T&T has major advantages in terms of oil and gas
logistics compared to the rest of the region.
• T&T must seize the opportunity immediately to capitalize
on the major projects around the region.
