WHAT CAN BROADBAND DO FOR INDIA?

• Broadband helps fast data transfers that most of the

networks need for file sharing.
• Health care is also one of the areas that could potentially
benefit from the penetration of broadband in India.
• The connectivity that broadband offers can do wonders in the
area of self-employment in India.
• The movement towards a paperless office would become a
reality. E-governance would become a reality making the
government offices interlinked with a central server and
requesting files over the network.
SOME IMPORTANT BROADBAND ISSUES

• The primary issue in broadband service area is the lack of

customer volumes, which are needed if service providers
need to subsidize rates.
• Another area of concern is that there is a fuzzy picture in the
market with respect to the availability of bandwidth.
• the capacities on both domestic and international bandwidth
links currently in India is nowhere near that of international
carriers or that available in more developed countries.
• the Internet is still in its early development stage in India

Reliance Communications.

• I tried to find customers whose average monthly telephone

bill was more than Rs.15000.Thus we judgment sampling.

• Govt Institutions were ignored because their purchase

decisions are made through tendering which is a different
channel altogether thus was beyond our scope of study.

CONCLUSIONS
• DID facilities are present in almost 50% of the existing subscriber base. Thus it is a well known
technology and also well accepted technology. Thus the prospects of E1-DID is quite good for Reliance
Communications.
• The average monthly billing of all organizations visited is quite scattered but clear majority of the
organizations visited, the monthly billing is more than Rs, 10000.
• Of the Samples i found from net of the customer satisfied with their existing network. Thus Reliance
has to come up with better product differentiation in order to covert the prospects into customers.
• Among the service providers in Voice category, BSNL is the market leader. The collected sample is not
representative of the actual market status because we tried to avoid sapling existing Reliance
Communication’s users.
• One notable thing in the voice category is the popularity of Tata Indicom with the software firms. Most
of the firms used Tata Indicom phones due to their lower tariffs for making Long distance ISD calls.
• In the Data Service Provider(ISP’s),BSNL. Ortel and STPI are the market leaders.Ortel is popular among
the small offices where as STPI is the major service provider for Educational Institutes and Software
Firms.
• Here the main rivals of Reliance Broadband are BSNL and STPI. Ortel should not be considered as a
major player due to its localization of service provided and low cost service mainly due to coupling with
is existing cable TV network.
• A notable thing is that most software firms prefer subscribing to more than one ISP because the
backbone of their operations rests on voice and data transfer. Hence they are more than willing to go
for a backup connection.
• We also found that most of the existing EPABX used in the sampled organization we PRI card ready.
Hence it should be easy for Reliance to market their precuts to them switching negligible switching cost.
SWOT Analysis of Reliance Broadband
Strength:
• State of the art technology: Reliance Broadband is employing state of the art technology by making use of fibre
optic cables to give wired line solutions to its customers.
• Reliable Network: By ensuring QOS (Quality of Service) and 99% uptime reliance is one of the most reliable
network present.
Weakness:
• Having solution only for big corporate customers is a weakness of Reliance Broadband. Its Solutions are not
commercially viable for customers with Monthly bill of less than Rs.15000/-
• Lack of awareness in market about the current services provided to customers is a weakness.
Opportunities:
• Growing industrialisation in the state with many multinationals establishing their production units in the state is a
huge opportunity for Reliance Broadband.
• Increasing number of software firms in the state is also an opportunity for Reliance as their business processes
rest on high speed and reliable data and voice transfers.
• The Government providing initiatives to more and more industrial houses to establish their facilities in the state is
also great opportunity for reliance.
• Relatively immature progress by other network service providers is also an opportunity for Reliance Broadband.
Threats:
• Cheap services provided by players like Ortel and BSNL are a threat to Reliance Broadband.
• Customers having existing analog EPABX are unwilling to upgrade due to high switching costs which is a threat to
Reliance Broadband because all its service are provided only on digital platforms.
RECOMMENDATION

• Reliance should try to capture the verticals such as educational institutions,

financial institutions and software firms.

• Their average monthly bill is quite high and thus posses enormous business
potential for Reliance.

• Educational instituted demand higher bandwidth with unlimited download

package. They are willing to pay a premium for that. Reliance with its high speed
fiber optic cable network can provide the right product for them. Educational
Institutes generally go for long term contracts hen the initial fixed cost incurred is
taken care of. Currently STPI is the market leader in providing data solutions to
major Another high yielding sector is the IT&ITES segment. The backbone of their
operations lies in high speed data channels. Thus they value reliable network
more. They are ready to pay a premium for reliable service.

• Also they tend to subscribe to more than one service provider. Thus selling
products to them is a bit easier.
