WHAT IS AUTOMATION
 Delegation of human control function to
technical equipments
 to increase production
 to reduce cost
 to reduce manpower
 to improve safety working conditions
 to reduce power consumption
 to improve quality

WHAT IS SCADA

SCADA stands for Supervisory Control And

Data Acquisition.
SUPERVISORY CONTROL AND
DATA ACQUISITION(SCADA)
WHAT IS DATA ACQUISITION

Data acquisition is the process of retrieving

control information from the equipment which
is out of order or may lead to some problem or
when decisions are need to be taken according
to the situation in the equipment. So this
acquisition is done by continuous monitoring
of the equipment to which it is employed. The
data accessed are then forwarded onto a
telemetry system ready for transfer to the
different sites.

SCADA AS A SYSTEM
 TYPICAL SCADA SYSTEM
SUBSYSTEMS OF SCADA SYSTEM
 Human-Machine Interface is the apparatus
which presents process data to a human
operator, and through this, the human operator
monitors and controls the process.
 Remote Terminal Units connecting to
sensors in the process,
converting sensor signals to digital data and
sending digital data to the supervisory system.
 Programmable Logic Controller used as
field devices because they are more
economical, versatile, flexible, and
configurable than special-purpose RTUs.
 Communication infrastructure connecting
the supervisory system to the

FEATURES OF SCADA

 REAL TIME AND HISTORICAL TREND

The trend play very important role in the process

operation. If your batch fails or the plant trips, you
can simply go to the historical trend data and do the
analysis. You can have better look of the parameters
through the trend.
 ALARMS
have a very critical role in automation.
Generally we have alarm states for each
inputs/outputs. . Most of the SCADA software
support four types of alarms like LOLO,LO,HI
and HIHI.
 RECIPE MANAGEMENT
When you have different products to
manufacture, you just have to load the recipe
of the particular product.
 SECURITY
You can allocate certain facilities or features to
the operator, process people, engineering dept
and maintenance dept.
 DEVICE CONNECTIVITY
SCADA software should have connectivity to
the different hardware used in automation.
USEFULNESS OF SCADA

 Production department
 Quality department
 Maintenance department
 Enterprise information
 Engineering department
 Manufacturing department

WHAT IS INTOUCH
 Wonderware InTouch provides a single
integrated view of all your controls and
information resources. Intouch enables
engineers, supervisors, operators and managers
to view and interact with the working of entire
operation through graphical representations of
their production processes.

SOFTWARE
 Easy-to-use, easy to implement
 Easy configuration, simplified maintenance
 High security and availability
 Virtually unlimited scalability
BENEFITS OF SCADA

 Long distance monitoring

 Long distance training
 Protection against terrorism/vandalism-alarm
 Data management (engineering and
operations)
 Automated operations with real time control
WHAT IS PLC :
 A Programmable Logic Controller, PLC, or
Programmable Controller is a digital computer used
for automation of industrial processes, such as control
of machinery on factory assembly lines.
 A PLC is an example of a real time system since
output results must be produced in response to input
conditions within a bounded time, otherwise
unintended operation will result.

BLOCK DIAGRAM OF PLC
Kinds of PLC
1. Compact
Monolithic construction
Monoprocessor
Fieldbus connection
Fixed casing
Fixed number of I/O (most of them binary)
No process computer capabilities (no MMC)
Typical product: Mitsubishi MELSEC F, ABB AC31, SIMATIC S7
2. Modular PLC
Modular construction (backplane)
One- or multiprocessor system
Fieldbus and LAN connection
3U or 6U rack, sometimes DIN-rail
Large variety of input/output boards
Connection to serial bus
Small MMC function possible
Typical products: SIMATIC S5-115, Hitachi H-Serie, ABB AC110

3. Soft-PLC
Windows NT or CE-based automation products
Direct use of CPU or co-processors

 1. Entry of the ladder logic diagram

 2. Low-level computer-type languages

 3. High-level computer-type languages

 4. Functional blocks

 5. Sequential function chart

ADVANTAGES OF PLC

 Saves Time and Money

 Less traveling for workers.
 Reduces man-power needs
 Increases production efficiency of a company
 Cost effective for power systems
 Saves energy
 Reliable
CONCLUSION
SCADA and PLC is a control system with
● More interfaces and efficient storage
● More record or device oriented configuration
● But system wide configuration tools are
needed
● Are less expensive than DCS, but offer
different functionality than DCS
● And finally various applications
