In the novels foreword,

Dharamvir Bharti has
written,
"While writing this
novel I experienced the
feeling one has during
depressing moments
when he prays
fervently, with full
faith.... It appears as if
the very same prayer
has been ingrained in
my heart and I am still
repeating it..."

ý

T¶was made into a national award

winning movie of the same name
in K by Shyam Benegal.
If you are wondering what Suraj
Ka Satwan Ghoda means then
Bharati ji has described it in a very
beautiful manner.
As per him, despite of all the
darkness and sadness, there is
something that inspires to light up
the dark, lead to the good.
The truth, faith and bravery lead
the soul to the light in the same
way the seven horses lead the
chariot of the Sun.

ý

The chariot of the Sun has to move

forward, always. But it¶s destroyed
during its journey via the streets of our
dark, corrupt, low-value and immoral
lives.
Except for the seventh horse, all the six
horses have been severely injured.
The seventh horse is still brave,
determined, focused and is moving
ahead continuously.
The seventh horse is the future. Bharati
ji has co-related this seventh horse with
the children of his novel¶s characters.
He says these children, the new
generation will lead us to the light and
we must have faith in this seventh horse.

Andha Yug focuses on the last day

of the Mahabharata war. The
ramparts are in ruins, the city is
burning and Kurukshetra is
covered with corpses and vultures.
The few bewildered survivors of
the Kaurava clan are overcome by
grief and rage. Longing for one last
act of revenge, they refuse to
condemn Ashwatthama when he
releases the ultimate weapon, the
brahmastra, which threatens to
annihilate the world. Instead, they
blame Krishna for having caused
the war, and curse him.

Ô One of the most significant plays of post-Independence

India, Dharamvir Bharati's Andha Yug raises pertinent
moral issues in the context of Partition-related atrocities.
Ô The figure of Krishna is central to the narrative. He
represents the infinite variety of ways in which the good
manifests itself in the ordinary world. He is the man of
justice and truth.
Ô The Kauravas, however, are unable to imagine the truth
about Krishna.
Ô This failure of imagination becomes the cause of their final
undoing.

In the novel Shyam tells
the story of his mother, her
teachings and the impact she
had on his life. Over forty-two
nights the words of Shyam
sketch in front of us the
childhood of Sane Guruji, the
hardships faced by his mother
and her efforts to make him a
man of character. The style is
fluid and a touch of poetic
luster brings out the emotions
with amazing eloquence.

:
