SAFETY IN AUTOMOBILE

GUIDED BY : CREATED BY:

INTRODUCTION
The driver does many careless considerations while driving. The
reasons may be the mental and physical discomfort; situations like
excitements, uneven roads; badly designed roads and lanes;
unfavorable weather conditions (rainy, foggy); frequent appearance of
jaywalkers on the road. Sometimes one uses mobile phones while
driving; he/she makes mistakes like unauthorized parking, traffic
signal violations etc. On the modern smooth road, probably the
average speed of the vehicles is increasing. Sometimes tardy police let
trucks trespass no-entry zones making other vehicles more prone to
accident.

SAFETY ASPECTS
SEAT BELT
 AIR BAGS
 BRAKES
 TYRES
 WINDOWS
 MIRRORS
 LIGHTS
 AUDIBLE WARNING DEVICES
 STEERING WHEEL
 AIRCONDITIONING
 WINTER DRIVING – FOG LAMPS & TYRE CHAINS
 FIRE SAFETY
SEAT BELT

A seat belt, sometimes called a safety belt, is a

safety harness designed to secure the occupant of a
vehicle against harmful movement that may result
from a collision or a sudden stop.
Safety belts offer protection in
three key ways
 Preventing or minimizing the impact in a
crash—driver’s impact against the vehicle interior
and other passengers. It is this impact that
causes injuries and fatalities.
 Stopping you from being thrown from the
vehicle.
 Helping absorb your inertia energy, allowing
occupants to slow at a rate similar to the
compartment.

AIR BAGS

Air bags are most commonly used for cushioning, in

particular for rapid inflation in the case of an
automobile collision.
BRAKES
A good brake system has the following features:

 The vehicle should be able to stop in the shortest

possible distance and still maintain stability.
 The vehicle can be easily controlled during
braking.
 Braking performance should be consistent with
brake pedal pressure.
>The brake system's response should be
consistent.
TYRES
 Tyres are one of a vehicle's most important
active safety features.
 Whenever a vehicle accelerates, corners or
brakes, it imposes forces on its tyres.
 Good tyres grip the road to allow a vehicle
to stop, go and corner safely, which can be
crucial in avoiding crashes.
WINDOWS
 Windows should be a good size and allow clear
vision in all directions, including a view of the
vehicle's extremities.
 The rake of some windows may cause glare or
reflections. Blind spots created by front and rear
pillars should be minimal.
MIRRORS
 Good mirrors will help minimize the car's blind
spots and enable driver to see when reversing,
parking or changing lanes.
 Mirrors should be easily adjustable from inside
the car to suit different driving positions.
LIGHTS
 Good headlights are an important safety feature
for driving at night and in poor light conditions.

 They should give driver a good view of the road

and roadside without distracting oncoming traffic.

 Fog lamps, front and rear, also assist visibility and

should only be used in poor conditions.
AUDIBLE WARNING
DEVICES
Horns are fitted to all cars as warning devices, but
the customers should consider a vehicle with a
warning beeper that sounds when the vehicle is
reversing. These beepers can prevent crashes in
areas with a lot of pedestrians and cyclists, such as
city streets and car parks.
STEERING WHEEL

Adjustable steering wheels can be moved forward

and backward, up and down, and tilted to different
angles. A correctly positioned steering wheel can
help maximize driver’s control of the vehicle.
AIRCONDITIONING

Air conditioning is not just a comfort feature; it

provides real safety benefits.
One should be able to adjust the temperature and
ventilation to suit climatic conditions. Air
conditioning helps prevent driver fatigue by keeping
him comfortable .
WINTER DRIVING – FOG
LAMPS & TYRE CHAINS
 To make winter driving safer several extras are
added – they are studded tyres which give better
grip on icy roads; tyre chains which improve grip on
soft snow; mud flaps which reduce the amount of
dirt thrown on the rear window and fog lamps to
improve visibility .
 Twin fog lamps must, by law, be positioned
symmetrically on each side of the car, not more than
three and half feet above road level. They can be
used as a substitute for head-lamps only in the bad
visibility .
FIRE SAFETY
 Fire prevention and protection is an important
factor in vehicle safety. The fuel tank and pipe
connections should be designed and positioned to
minimize any likely damage in a crash.

 Some vehicles automatically shut off fuel flow in a

crash.
CONCLUSION &
DISCUSSION
We have not seen the safety features mechanically, but we
always have tried to keep a balance between the mechanical and
the human’s mental and physical point of views. As safety
objective we mainly highlight with the driving skill and proper
utilization of the driving education. The safety objective may be
the eyes on the road, hands on the steering wheel, full attention
to the driving task and an appropriate level of information
processing by the driver. With the increasing number of high
tech flyovers, widen road, maximum utilization of the
electronic gadgets and the careless decision of the driver we are
gradually retreating the threshold of safety world. In this
respect human awareness in driving will provide our utmost
safety beside every safety parameter, proposed in this paper to
get rid of any fears of road hazards.
