STRUCTURE FAILURE

Introduction
■ Structural failure refers to the loss of
load -carrying capacity in either a
structural component, or the
structure itself.
■ Structural failure is initiated when a
material is stressed beyond
its strength limit, causing fracture or
excessive deformations.
■ In a well- designed system, a
localized failure should not cause
immediate or even progressive
collapse of the entire structure.
Causes of Structure failure:-
■ The first type is that structure is not strong and tough enough to support
the load, due to either its size, shape, or choice of material.
■ The second type of failure is from fatigue or corrosion, caused by
instability in the structure’s geometry, design or material properties.
■ The third type of failure is caused by improper selection of materials,
incorrect sizing, improper heating treatment or poor workmanship.
■ The fourth type of failure is from the use of defective materials.
■ The fifth cause of failure is from lack of consideration of unexpected
problems.
Foundation failure
Use of pile foundations where
the soil is shrinkable, so that
forces are transferred to the hard
strata or rock.

Taking the foundation levels

down to avoid foundation on
shrinkable soils.
Column failure

1. Compression
failure
■ When the loads are greater in
amount compared to the cross-
sectional area of the column, the
concrete and steel will reach the
yield stress and failure will be
starting without any later
deformation.
2. Buckling failure

1. Buckling failure generally

occurs in long columns.
Because they are very
slender and their least
lateral dimension is greater
than 12. In such condition,
the load carrying capacity of
the column decreases very
much.
Beam Failure

1. Flexural failure
■ Flexural strength, also
known as fracture strength,a
material property, defined as
the stress in a material just
before it yields in a flexure
test.
■ failure occurs at mid span of
beam.
2. Shear Failure

■ Shear strength is the

strength of a material or
structural failure where the
material or component fails
in shear.
■ shear failure occurs at the
end of the beam where
beam connect to column.
Example of collapsed building
1.Canacona Building collapse
■ The under-construction five-storey
building crashed on Saturday, killing
18 workers, injuring 14.
■ Poor workmanship, lack of soil
analysis and substandard quality of
construction materials may have
been largely responsible for the
tragic collapse of a building in Ruby
residency in Chaudi, Canacona.
■ m20 grade of concrete appears to
have been used for the columns. "It
is okay for the slabs but not columns
and m25 grade would have been
better
