Cells

A chimpanzee is a multicellular organism


 One of the cells both humans and chimps
share are stem cells
 Like humans, they also have iPS cells

Energy
A chimpanzee is a heterotroph, which
means they get their food from a source
 They are omnivores, so they eat both
plants and animals
 Rely heavily on fruits and leaves as well
as insects, bark, eggs ,nuts and can even
hunt for monkeys
 To get fruit it’s easy, but to obtain other
animals it is necessary to hunt!
Ecology

 Southern Senegal
 Congo river
 Uganda and Tanzania are common
places where chimps live.
 Tropical Rainforests = habitat
 They are secondary consumers

 Secondary Consumer- consumes the


animals that eat only plants. Secondary
consumers primarily consume meat
 Their predators are leopards
 Eagles
 Other large cats.
Why are they endangered?
 Chimpanzees are 50/50 endangered ,
 Population- 170,000-300,000 in the wild
 Primary threats- habitat destruction
because people building large roads,
hunting and disease
Why are they endangered (continued)
 To save them they would be put into a
private location to prevent hunting

“Chimp Haven”
Reproduction
 Sexual Repoduction
 A female sex sign is when her genitals
get swollen and pink.
 Females can begin reproducing at 10-13
years
 Pregnant for 243 days
Growth and Development

 LifeSpan ~ 40-50 years in the wild and


50-60 years in captivity
 Weight- 88-130 lbs. and 1.15 meters(3.8
feet)
 The growth isn’t really there except the
growth in height and weight and their
mouth turns black instead of being pink
Body form
 They move on all fours
 They move by using their hips, pelvis,
arms and knees
 They are 100% symmetric (bilateral)
 Their hair can show their emotion!!
Response to Stimuli

 When they get angry their hair on the


head rises
Adaptions
 They have a big toe to grab branches
 They are flexible which gives them
advantage w/ running and climbing
 They are similar to humans!/ same
family (hominidae)
