 PROJECT GUIDE-
Mr. NARENDRA SINGH SIKARWAR
INTRODUCTION
 Sprinkler is a device used mainly for irrigation, as a cooling
system. Method of sprinkler irrigation is quite similar to natural
rainfall. Water is distributed through a system of pipes usually by
pumping.
 Sprinklers contain rotational energy similar to that of turbine.
 Sprinkler turbine is a apparatus that is a combination of sprinkler
and turbine. It consists of a sprinkler which is designed in such a
way that most of the hydraulic energy is converted to the rotational
energy by using nozzles.
HISTORICAL REFRENCES

HERO'S AELOPILE
 An Aeolipile also known as a Hero engine is a simple bladeless radial
steam turbine which spins when the central water container is heated.
Torque is produced by steam jets exiting the turbine, much like a tip jet or
rocket engine in the 1st century, Hero of Alexandria described the
device, and many sources give him the credit for its invention.
A MODERN REPLICA OF HERO'S
AEOLIPILE
• A standalone device, and was presumably intended as a temple
wonder, like many of the other devices described in Pneumatic.
• Vitruvius, on the other hand, mentions use of the aeolipile for
demonstrating the physical properties of it is not known whether
the aeolipile was put to practical use in ancient times.
• U.S. Navy use
In recognition of the Aeolipile's contribution to steam
engineering, the U.S. Navy chose a
semblance of the aeolipile for the Boiler Technician rating badge.
PARTS OF SPRINKLER TURBINE

 Supply pipes (PVC).

 Nozzles.
 Electrical motor.
 External electrical circuit.
 Bearings.
DETERMINATION OF THE SPEED OF THE
SPRINKLER
Suppose the flow rate is given by Q, length of arms by L, and diameter of
the nozzles by d, then
rate of flow through each arm is = Q/4
so velocity of jet from nozzles relative to the nozzle(Vjet)= (Q/4)/area of
nozzle
that is =Q/(π×d2)
Angular velocity=vnozzle/L .

Frequency= angular velocity/(2π).

CALCULATION OF THE POWER
GENERATED
By using impulse-momentum equation-
 T= (d×m×v)out-(dxm×v)in
 Since number of arms are 4-
 T= 4*(d×m×v)out-0
 T=d*ρ*Q*v
 Power generated= T*ω.
 Power generated from generator=efficiency*(T*ω).

SCOPE OF FUTURE USE

Sprinklers are used widely as a means of irrigation in parks,

playgrounds, houses and many more places. But if these sprinklers
are replaced with the Sprinkler Turbine then they can also solve
small energy requirements of these places along with the purpose it
is meant to serve. Sprinkler Turbines can be easily designed to meet
the energy requirements of a house, however in that case designed
should be done at a relatively large scale.
EFFICIENCY

 Mechanical efficiency measures the effectiveness of a machine in

transforming the energy and power that is input to the device into an
output force and movement. Efficiency is measured as a ratio of the
measured performance to the performance of an ideal machine.
 efficiency=(shaft power)/(water power)
 shaft power=2×π×n(torque generated)
 water power=density×q×g×h
 torque generated=m×r×Vjet.
