    The first 25 years of the University of Arkansas saw fluctuations in student enrollment, with early students typically being poor, uneducated, and from rural areas of Arkansas. The first buildings on campus were two-story wooden structures that housed all classes in the area that now contains the library. Old Main, the first major building, began construction in the early 1870s and was occupied before completion in 1875, while additional housing was added for male students such as Buchanon Hall, Hill Hall, and Gray Hall and female students like Carnall Hall through 1905.
