Cartesian Coordinate System

Objectives:
After this presentation the students are expected
to:
1.Determine the history of cartesian coordinate
system.
2.Identify the parts of cartesian coordinate
system
3.Plot the points in cartesian coordinate plane
given the ordered pairs.
HISTORY
OF
CARTESIAN
COORDINATE SYSTEM
Early in the 17th century, Rene Descartes, a
mathematician and philosopher, used
horizontal and vertical number lines drawn
perpendicular to each other to divide a plane
into four regions called QUADRANTS.

WHAT IS ORDERED
PAIRS??
*Ordered pairs are used to locate points in a plane.
*The points are named in reference to the two perpendicular
number lines.
*The first number or coordinate of an ordered pair
corresponds to a number on the x-axis. It is called ABSCISSA.
*The second number of the ordered pair corresponds to a
number on the y-axis. It is called the ORDINATE.
HOW TO PLOT/GRAPH
ORDERD PAIR/S
TO
COORDINATE PLANE?
*Given:
A(5,4) .
To graph a point in the coordinate
plane shown before this slide, start
in the origin and move 5 units to
the right and then 4 units up. The
number 5 and 4 are called the
coordinatev of point A.
*The number 5 is called the x-
coordinate or abscissa.
*The number 4 is called the y-
c00rdinate or ordinate.
Therefore, the exact location of point
A is written as A(5,4)
*It is important to name the coordinate of a point
in order. This means that a point identified by
(5,4) is different from the point identified as (4,5)
-REMEMBER-
*Exactly one point in the plane is named by a
ordered pair of numbers.
*Exactly one ordered pair of numbers names a
given in the part.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:
A. Determine the quadrant and coordinate for B,C,D,E and F
on the graph.
SOLUTION:
*Point B is 4 units to the right and 2 units up. It is
in quadrant I and the coordinates are (4,2).
*Point C is 1 unit to the right and 1 ½ units up. It is
in quadrant I and the coordinates are (1,1 ½).
*Point D is 2 units to the left and 2 units up. It is
in quadrant II and the coordinates are (-2,2).
*Point E is 2 units to the left and 4 units down. It
is in quadrant III and the coordinates are (-2,-4).
*Points F is 5 unit to the right and 4 units down. It
is in quadrant IV and the coordinates are (5,-4).

3. N (-2,-5)
4. C (1,-7)
5. E (8,2)
6. N (3,-2)
