INTRODUCTION
OVERTAKING MANOEUVRE
ASSUMPTIONS
CRITERION FOR MEASUREMENT
EXAMPLE

2
Minimum sight distance that should be available to a
driver for overtaking another vehicle safely

 Restrictions for passing opportunities affect the level of

service for highways (two-lane two-way)

3
Overtaking vehicle follows the slow vehicle for some time

Finds a favourable condition for overtaking

Pulls out, overtakes and returns back to original lane before

meeting an oncoming vehicle

4
5
 A single vehicle overtaking a single vehicle
Overtaken vehicle travels at uniform speed
Vehicle travelling from opposite direction is at same
speed as the overtaking vehicle
 Difference between average speed of overtaking and
overtaken vehicle is 15 kmph (AASHTO)
 Speed of overtaken vehicle is 16 kmph lesser than the
design speed of the road (IRC)

6
IRC AASHTO

Height of driver’s eye above road 1.2 m 1.08 m

Height of the object above road 1.2 m 1.08 m

•Design Speed : 100 kmph
•Max Overtaking Acceleration = 0.72 m / sec2
•Reaction Time = 2 sec
•Minimum Overtaking Sight Distance?

9
V = 100 km/h , a = 0.72 m/s
Vb = 100 – 16 = 84 km/h =23.34 m/s
d1 = 0.278 Vb t = 0.278 x 84 x 2 = 46.704 m
s = 0.7 vb + 6 = 0.7 x 23.34 + 6 = 22.338 m
T = 4s/a = (4 x 22.338)/0.72 = 11. 14 m
d2 = 0.278 Vb T + 2s = (0.278 x 84 x 11.14 )
+ 2 x 22.338
= 304.81 m
d3 = 0.278VT = 0.278 x 100 x 11.14 = 309.69 m
OSD = d1 + d2 + d3 = 661.204 m

•Why OSD is needed?

•What are the influencing factors of OSD?
