GROUP 2
BEHAVIORAL METHODS
 NATURAL METHOD or RHYTHM METHOD

 OVULATION METHOD

 WITHDRAWAL METHOD
NATURAL METHOD
or RHYTHM METHOD

 Does not require the use of any drug, chemical or

plastic sheaths.
 It is commonly known as rhythm method because its

success depends upon the woman’s monthly cycle.

 The husband simply refrains from having sexual

intercourse with his wife during fertile period.

How effective…

According to the Couple to Couple League,

the Sympto-thermal Method of Natural Family
Planning can be used at the 99% of
effectiveness In avoiding pregnancy.
Advantages..
 No harmful efffects from hormone use occur .

 Thismay be the only method acceptable to couples for

cultural and religious reasons.
Disadvantages…

 Most suitable for women with regular and predictable

menstrual cycles
 Complete abstinence is necessary during the fertile

period
 Requires discipline and systematic charting
 Not effective with improper use
 Does not protect against STDs
OVULATION METHOD

 The fertile period could be determined through the

use of the calendar, thermometer or appearance of
cervical mucus or vaginal discharge in the vaginal
canal.
 For women with normal regular cycles, the body
temperature usually drops sharply a day or two before
ovulation and rises after ovulation has occurred.

 The presence of mucus or vaginal discharge in the

vaginal canal which usually occurs three days after
menstruation is a sure indication that ovulation is soon
to occur.
 The first discharge of mucus is usually yellowish which
soon turns clearer and more slippery..referred to as the
“peak symptom” and sexual union should be avoided.

 To be successful, both husband and wife must have

open communication, understanding and high
motivation.
WITHDRAWAL METHOD
 Coitus interruptus involves withdrawal of the entire
penis from the vagina before the man ejaculates (before
sperm leaves the penis).

 Fertilization is prevented because sperm does not

contact a woman’s egg.
How effective…
 This depends largely on the man's capability to
withdraw prior to ejaculation.

 The failure rate is estimated to be about 4% in the first

year of using this method exactly. In typical use, the
rate is more like 19% during the first year of use.
 The failure rate means this method does not work to
prevent pregnancy, and some couples using it will
become pregnant anyway.

 The higher the failure rate, the more likely a woman is

to have an unintended pregnancy.
Advantage..

 This method can be used at any time, with no devices,

no cost, does not involve chemicals or hormones, and
may offer a lower risk for other problems.
Disadvantages..

 This method could be unreliable due to the emission of

pre-ejaculatory fluid over which the husband has no
control.
This fluid may contain enough sperm cells that may
cause pregnancy.

 The deprivation of considerable physical satisfaction

for both husband and wife which may later have
psychological effects.
 There is a high risk for unintended pregnancy.

 This method does not protect against sexually

transmitted diseases (STDs).
