Relevance to Microfluidics
• No energy input, but pressure head is being used to drive the flow of fluid.

• The Reynold’s number in a microchannel is very small (of the order

of 0.1).

• Parameters of concern are:

i) Re = (Velocity)(Hydraulic diameter)/(Kinematic viscosity)
ii) Pe = (Velocity)(Length of mixing path)/(Diffusion coefficient)

• Methods to generate chaotic advection (improving mixing index):

(a) Providing different holes for input of fluids.
(b) Providing with as many turns as possible along the channel.
(c) Introducing concept of splitting and recombination.

Parameters

• T-mixer: Two inlets of width 100 micron each, outlet

diameter is 200 micron.
• Y mixer: Two inlets of width 100 micron each,
intermediate angle of ---60o, outlet diameter is 200
micron
• Serpentine mixer: Channel width: 450 micron,
depth: 260 micron, wall width: 150 micron
• Mixing index:

C (outlet concentration gradient) can be measured

using colorimetry or spectrophotometry.
