Paper review : Assessment of The Surface Hardening Effects From Hammer

Peening On High Strength Steel

• The aim of this work: to study modifications of the local

microstructure induced by hammering and present the results of a
detailed micro structural characterization of a high strength steel
hammered manually and automatically.
Paper review : Assessment of The Surface Hardening Effects From
Hammer Peening On High Strength Steel

Introduction
This study investigates the effect of hammer peening on the fatigue resistance of high
strength welded joints in high strength structural steel S690.

Cyclic four point bending tests have been performed on butt weld samples, manually
and automatically hammered.

Microstructural and mechanical modifications induced by both methods and their

subsequent influences in fatigue life have been studied using several characterization
techniques.
Assessment of The Surface Hardening Effects From Hammer Peening
On High Strength Steel

In Steel construction assembly welding is the most used method, however
welding reduces the fatigue life of components due to : Notch stress
concentration and residual tensile stress in the weld joints.

Hammer peening process beneficial effects: 1) introduces large

compressive stress which tend to dim the harmful tensile stress state,2)the
plastic deformation induced by the hammering tool reduce the stress
concentration factor.

On High Strength Steel

 Fatigue properties of material are highly sensitive to the

microstructure and properties of surface material: Ex: a small size
grain size can enhance the fatigue crack initiation threshold. Coarse
size grain may deflect the propagation path of fatigue.

Components with Nano grains or ultra –fine grains superficial layers

are expected to have improved fatigue life.
