HEPATITIS
Inflammation of the liver

CAUSES:
• Viruses (Hepatitis A, B C viruses)
• Drugs/ Alcohol use
• Body can mistakenly attack healthy cells

3
Symptoms
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Dark-colored urine and pale bowel
movements
• Stomach pain
• Jaundice, yellowing of skin and eyes

4
TYPES
OF
HEPATITIS

5
HEPATITIS A
“a non‐enveloped picornavirus, containing a
single‐stranded RNA packaged in a protein shell”
• Varies from region to region with high prevalence
in developing countries
• Infection usually results from exposure to
contaminated water or food
• Transferred through: person to person/ outbreaks
• Vaccination or previous exposure to HAV gives
long-term immunity
• Does not result in chronic infection

6
HEPATITIS B
“HBV infection is highly prevalent and responsible for significant rates of morbidity
and mortality from liver cancer and liver cirrhosis, in untreated chronically infected
individuals.”

• Virus is transmitted usually through blood, semen, or

another body fluid from a person infected with the
Hepatitis B virus.
• Can be transmitted from mother to infant.
• May be acute, or short-term, illness but for others, it
HEPATITIS C
can become a long-term, chronic infection • Blood-borne virus
• best way to prevent Hepatitis B is by getting vaccinated. • Can be transmitted through sharing needles or other
• Chronic Hepatitis B can lead to serious health issues, like equipment to inject drugs.
cirrhosis or liver cancer • 70%-85% people who become infected with Hepatitis C,
it becomes a long-term, chronic infection
• The person might not be aware of their infection
• There is no vaccine.

7
HEPATITIS D

• Hepatitis D is a serious liver disease caused by the

Hepatitis D virus (HDV)
• Relies on HBV to replicate.
• Transmitted through contact with infectious blood,
similar to how HBV is spread.
HEPATITIS E
• There is no vaccine for Hepatitis D. • Hepatitis E is a serious liver disease caused by the
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) that usually results in an acute
infection. It does not lead to a chronic infection.
• Transmitted through ingestion of fecal matter, even in
microscopic amounts; outbreaks are usually associated
with contaminated water supply in countries with poor
sanitation.
• There is currently no FDA-approved vaccine for Hepatitis
E.

World hepatitis day in Burkina Faso, 2017:
seroprevalence and vaccination against
hepatitis B virus to achieve the 2030
elimination goal

9
Summary:
• Burkina Faso is a high endemicity country for HBV
infection, with prevalence of HBV was higher in the sixth
district (14.3%) of Ouagadougou
• HBsAg detection test (Abon Biopharma Guangzhou, Co.,
Ltd. Chine) for 2216 individuals who voluntarily wanted
to get tested/vaccinated
• vaccination rate of 60.5%.
• Vaccination coverage ranged from 44.5 to 73.7% all
twelve districts.
