• What happens when you stir sugar into tea?

• Where does the sugar go?
• Does it disappear, or it is still in the tea but not
visible ?

• When you stir sugar into tea you are making a

solution .
solutions
• Some materials can dissolve in water or
other liquids.

• Materials that dissolves form solutions.

Dissolve: when a Solution: mixture

substance mixes usually made of
with another solid dissolved in
substance and a liquid
become part of it
• Solutions always have two parts:
• The solute: the material that is dissolved.

• The solvent: the liquid in which the solute

dissolves.

So solution is made up of a solute dissolved

in a solvent.
• You cannot see the solute in a solution after it
has dissolved . Why?????
The particles of the solute move in between
the solvent particles when they dissolve.
• Solution of : copper sulfate crystals and water

• Water solvent
• copper sulfate solute
• When liquid evaporates from a solution the solid
solute is left behind.
• So it is possible to separate a solid from a liquid
by evaporation.
Mixtures and pure substances
• Mixture:
- made of particles of different substances.
- can be separated.
- not chemically joined.
• Pure substance:
-made only of particles of that substance
- can not be separated
- chemically joined
