Operations based on different purposes:

Skimming
The candidate can:
Obtain main ideas and discourse topic
quickly and efficiently
Establish quickly the structure of a text
Decide the relevance of a text ( or part of
a text) to their needs.

Search reading
The candidate can quickly find information on a
predetermined topic.
Scanning
The candidate can quickly find:
Specific words or phrases
Figures,percentages
Specific items in a index
Specific names in a bibliography or a set of
references

3. Speed

 Reading speed may be expressed in words per


minute.

 Different speed will be expected for careful and


expeditious reading.

 The expected speed of reading will combine with


the number and difficulty of items to determine the
amount of time needed for the test, or part of it.
4. Criterial level of performance

Traditional passmarks expressed in percentages: no


direct interpretation

To use the test tasks themselves to define


the level

When can we compare performance on the test using


scales: ACTFL or ILR?
