Unit 14- Selecting and using
Secondary Machining Techniques

Grinding Machines
Aims
1. Be able to identify the
parts of a grinding
machine.
2. List the PPE required
when carrying out a
grinding operation
3. Understand the uses of
a grinding machine
4. Be able to carry out pre /
post operation safety
checks

What is grinding?
The action of
removing material by
the use of a rotating
abrasive
Grinding machines
through the ages
A grindstone is a round
sharpening stone used
for grinding or
sharpening ferrous tools
They are usually made
from sandstone.
The earliest recorded
use of grindstones was
830 AD.
A grindstone using a
double crank
mechanism and treadle
power was recorded in
1460
Why Bother?
• Produces an extremely high quality finish
• Produces a very accurate tollerance (±
0.0025mm)
• Can remove material after surface finishing i.e
heat treatment
• Easily automated
• Reasonably cheap consumables (200mm x
20mm GP Wheel Approx £18.50)
Types of grinding
machines
1. Hand held
grinders
2. Pedestal
grinders /
bench
mounted
3. Surface
grinders
Hand Held Grinders
Pros Cons
1. Light weight 1. Very limited
2. Portable safety guards
3. Cheap 2. Easily misused
4.Can be used in 3. Can snatch very
confined spaces easily
4.Noisy
5. Very dangerous
Pedestal / Bench mounted grinders
Pros Cons
1. Easy to operate 1. Un guarded grinding
2. Can control the surfaces
grind easily 2. Slow run down time
3. Quick to set up / 3. Disk needs
use maintaining / dressing
4. Small 4. Requires operator to
5. Interchangeable be very close
disk set up
Surface Grinders
Pros Cons
1. Very accurate 1. Require lots of
2. Automated space
3. Guarded 2. Expensive
4.Quick 3. Limited work
5. Perfect finish – piece size
Depending on disk

Types – Surface Grinders
 There are 3 types of surface
grinder
1. Vertical. The column is
vertically over the table and the
wheel head raises and lowers.
2. Horizontally. The column runs
across the work and the wheel
head crosses the work. The
work only moves longitudinally
not across
3. Universal. The machine is able
to grind internal and external
faces by using a swivelling table
and specialist holding devices
PPE
Grinding is a very
dangerous process. The
process produces lots of
heat in both the grinding
wheel and the material.
It produces flying sparks
and fragments of
grinding material. The
process is noisy, well in
excess of 100 dB are
produced during the
operation. There is also a
risk of wheel fracture or
chipping.
PPE - Continued
1. Gloves
2. Goggles
face shield
3. Apron
4.Ear defence
Surface Grinding Demo
Please ensure you have a pair of
safety goggles and quietly
move to Room W076
Grinding Disk - Overview
Various types of • Profiled
disk for different • Angled
uses. • Hard
• Smooth • Pourous
• Course
• Shaped
• Flat
Some grinding wheel shapes
In groups
• Look at the various
disks being passed out.
• Decide weather the
surface is fine or
course.
• Try and identify the
grinding face
Summary
You should be able to:

1. Be able to identify the parts of a grinding

machine.
2. List the PPE required when carrying out a
grinding operation
3. Understand the uses of a grinding
machine
4. Be able to carry out pre / post operation
safety checks
5. Next lesson – Material removal
calculations
Almost Finished……
1. Please place the grinding disks back on
the front bench
2. Place ALL goggles in the holder if you
haven’t done already
3. Hang ALL aprons back on the hook
4.THEN you may leave quietly
