WORKING OF ENGINE CONTROL UNIT

Controlling the air-fuel mixture

This is the one of the most Important function of ECU . It determines
the amount of air-fuel mixture injecting into the engine. It also decides
whether it is the right time to deliver the air-fuel mixture in a proper
ration or not. This process is also called injection duration.

Controlling the ignition timing

ECU adjust the exact timing of the spark or the ignition timing to
provide the better power and economy. ECU detects the knocking and
delayed the time of spark to prevent it.
ADVANTAGES OF ENGINE CONTROL UNIT
Better Fuel Economy

Smaller Amount of Exhaust Emission

Maximum Efficiency and Maximum

performance

Proper Amount A/F Ratio

Ability to support mechanical

modifications to ensure proper
operating parameters
DISADVANTAGE OF ENGINE CONTROL UNIT

If a total ECU failure occurs, the engine fails.

Upon total ECU failure, pilots have no manual controls for engine
restart, throttle, or other functions.

Single point of failure risk can be mitigated with redundant ECU

High system complexity compared to hydro mechanical, analogue or

manual control systems

High system development and validation effort due to the complexity
