Why ?
 Behind the notion of surplus food in the country, 200 million people go undernourished
 To overcome technology fatigue and sluggish growth
 Farmers committing suicide and national sample surveys indicate people leaving farming
 Slow growth in sector compared to population growth
 Climate change and threatening food supply.

How can it be carried out?


 Improving genetic traits of crops, by making them draught, pest, weed, climate resistant.
 Use of bio pesticides and bio fertilizers.
 Bigger strategy targeted towards organic farming.
 Organic farming

Organic farming
 Keeps the soil alive and in good health by use of organic wastes( crop, animal and farm wastes,
aquatic wastes)

 Use of biological materials along with beneficial microbes( bio fertilizers)

 Release nutrients to crops for increased sustainable production in an eco-friendly, pollution friendly
environment

National project on organic farming:
Capital investment subsidy scheme for agro-waste compost production unit

Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan States:


under which financial assistance is provided for adopting organic farming and setting up of vermin
compost unit

Indo Israel Agricultural cooperation action plan:


o In which Israel shares its expertise (mainly in organic farming & related technologies) with India.
o Includes structured interactions between governments, experts and farmers.
o Bilateral sharing of knowledge and technologies, establishment of Centres of Excellence in various agriculture
sectors across India, exchange visits of experts and farmers

What can be done?


 “Precision agriculture” – harnessing of data to make use of vital inputs such as water and fertiliser
 Like Agrimitra app developed in Tamilnadu to give site specific recommendation to farmers on the correct
fertiliser dose based on data from local department of agriculture
 Adopting 4R’s of nutrient stewardship- right source, right rate, right time, right place
