A STUDY ON PERFORMANCE COMPARISON FOR THE

LAST 3 YEARS OF THE CALICUT INTERNATIONAL

AIRPORT

SRUTHY K S (16MIB105)
 Air cargo is any property carried or to be carried in
an aircraft. Air cargo comprises air freight, air express
and airmail. The first cargo flight took place on the 7
November 1910 in the USA,
between Dayton and Columbus, Ohio. piloted a Wright
Model B aeroplane 65 miles (105 km) carrying a package
of 200 pounds of silk for the opening of a store.
Newspaper clippings quoted the Wright brothers as stating
he covered the distance in 66 minutes, but the flight was
officially recorded at 57 minutes, a world speed record at
the time. It was the first “cargo only” flight solely for the
transport of goods; the first flight commissioned by a
client, and the first example of multimodal air transport,
since the pieces of silk were transported by car from
Columbus aerodrome to the store.
The study attempts to analyse the development
and performance of exports and imports in
airway. The objectives included
 To study the importance of Air cargo
transportation.
 To study the procedures of exporting and
importing cargos.
 To study the performance of exports and
imports of Calicut airport.
 To suggest measures for improvement of
cargo handling in Calicut airport.
 The process by which study is carried out and
the description of the work flow and phenomena
are collectively called as methodology. The
present research is an analytical study of Export
Import Performance of Calicut International
Airport . The various aspects of performance of
various ports are analyzed with the help of the
information contained in the research papers,
reports, journals, websites, reference books,
newspapers and magazines. Secondary data are
used in this Study. Data provided in the internet
have also been used.
 The study is based on export and import
performance of Calicut airport.
 Agricultural , marine , papper magazines etc are
exported and imported mainly to Middle East
countries and domestic too.
 The present study aimed to gain practical
knowledge about cargo handling in Calicut
airport. Export and import details of Calicut
airport is statisticaly depicted in the report which
gives clear idea about the export import
performance of Calicut airport.
 The report gives proper findings and suggestion
for the performance of airport and measures to
improve export and import in the airport.
 The collected data is secondary and so the
reliability of data cannot be accurate.
 There is limited literature available in market
about the subject.
 Complete accuracy not possible due to errors
in data collection.
 Calicut International Airport (IATA: CCJ, ICAO: VOCL), also
known as Karipur Airport, is an international airport serving
the Metropolitan area of Kozhikode, Malappuram and rural
Malabar in Kerala, India. It is located in Karipur, about 28 km
(17 mi) from Kozhikode and 25 km (16 mi) from Malappuram.
The airport serves as an operating base for Air India Express.
It was the twelfth-busiest airport in India in terms of overall
passenger traffic. It is the third-busiest airport in Kerala
after Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. It was given
international airport status on 2 February 2006.
 1) The Calicut Airport is one of the major airport which promotes
the foreign trade.
 2) The airport is having proper EDI System
 3) It is found that reduction of flights have affected the exports
and imports.
 4) Vegetables, fruits and flowers are the main export items from
the airport
 5) Middle East is the main destination of Calicut Airport.
 6) Its found that the present cargo terminal is weak in terms of
handling capacity. This problem will be overcome by the
establishment of new terminal in 15 acres shortly.
 7) Value of exports in the year 2014-15 was the highest
compared to next 2 years with 17504 consignments.
 8) Emirates Airlines carries the highest amount of goods in the
year 2014. There was a decline in expots and imports in the next
years because of cancelling the airlines.
 9) Value of imports in the year 2014-15 was the highest
compared to next 2 years with 12878 consignments.
 The following are some of the suggestions recommended
by the Study,
 The KSIE can provide container and cargo handling
equipment sufficient for the development of cargo
terminal.
 More private participation leads to the increase of cargo
terminal.
 The Airport can concentrate on improving the storage
facility for imported cargos.
 Modernization of airport facilities and use of updated
technology can improve operational efficiency.
 The airport should improve facilities for more airlines and
should take necessary steps for introducing more airlines.
 From the study it is evident that the
performances of the ports has been declined.
The problem can be solved using proper
technology and increasing more airlines . There
is need for a national port planning policy,
factoring in risk of change.Environmental and
social concerns should play an equal role along
with profit factors, economic and technical
viability. There is an opportunity for expanding
the potential of existing major ports with proper
guidance and assistance from the Central
Government and respective State Government.
