BACKGROUND | AUTHOR
Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, Lord of Montaigne
was born on February 28 1533 and died on
September 13 1592. He was one of the most
significant philosophers of the French
Renaissance known for popularizing the essay
as a literary genre. His work is noted for its
merging of casual anecdotes and autobiography
with serious intellectual insight; his massive
volume Essais contains some of the most
influential essays ever written.
BACKGROUND | AUTHOR
Montaigne had a direct influence on
Western writers, including Francis Bacon,
René Descartes, Blaise Pascal Jean-
Jacques Rousseau, Albert Hirschman,
William Hazlitt, Ralph Waldo Emerson,
Friedrich Nietzsche, Stefan Zweig, Eric
Hoffer and possibly William Shakespeare.
STORY | BACKGROUND

Androcles or Androclus is the name given by


some sources to the main character.
The story reappeared in the Middle Ages as "The
Shepherd and the Lion" and was then ascribed to
Aesop's Fables. It can be compared to Aesop's
“The Lion and the Mouse” in both its general
trend and in its moral of the reciprocal nature of
mercy.
STORY | BACKGROUND

Androclus and the lion is about a Roman slave,


Androclus and a lion in which he met when he
was in Africa, before he was captured by the
Romans. The lion and Androclus became friends
when he treated the wound of the lion in a cave.
When he was sentenced to fight in Rome, he met
the lion for the second time

• Apion tells what he witnessed
• The Roman people were being praised by
others because they use animals to fight
against the warriors or people sentenced to
death
• The animals are mostly lions because of their
terrifying attributes
• Androclus of Dacia was a slave of a consular
ranked Roman lord
• The lion showed its gentle and peaceful way of
being hurt to Androclus
PLOT
COMPLICATION

• Androclus escaped from his tyrannic master in


Rome to Africa.
• He found an impassable cave and stayed
there until the lion goes inside and they stayed
together for 3 years.
• They tried to survive in the midst of the forest
in the meantime.
• After 3 years in Africa, Roman soldiers found
Androclus and made him separate from the
lion.
PLOT
CLIMAX
• Androclus was sent to the Coliseum
because he was sentenced to death.

• He was planned to fight with a large and


ferocious lion.

• When the lion is released from the


cage, it instantly recognized Androclus
from Africa.

RESOLUTION

• The lion that recognized him, wiggled its


tail and did not attack its former friend.

• Androclus is back together with the lion


he spent with in the cave in Africa.

• The audience marveled at the


strange sight.

• The emperor ordered Androclus’


master for him to be free from his
sentence.

• The lion is also given to him as a


gift.

What have you learned


from the story?
The lesson is that “Gratitude is the sign of a noble soul!” It means that a person who
shows gratitude is most likely a noble man. Being noble is showing personal qualities
that people admire such as generosity, honesty, courage, etc. Gratitude is the quality
of being thankful, readiness to show appreciation and to return kindness.
The moral value that we have seen in the story is never forget the person who helps
us when we are in trouble. A person's good deed will definitely help him in any critical
situation that he endeavor. Don't hesitate to help a person who is in trouble. Your
good deed will be rewarded one day.
