EARLY LIFE

 At 13 he enrolled in the Lakeside School.

 The Mothers Club at the school bought an


ASR-33 teletype terminal and a block of
computer time on a General Electric (GE)
computer for the school's students.

 1st program written by Bill Gates on this


computer was TIC-TAC-TOE.

 Information Sciences, Inc. hired the four
Lakeside students to write a payroll program
in COBOL, providing them computer time
and royalties.

 Atage 17, Gates formed a venture with Allen,


called Traf-O-Data, to make traffic counters.

 Gates graduated from Lakeside School in
1973.

 He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT and


enrolled at Harvard College in the autumn of
1973.
 In his sophomore year, Gates devised an

1975 the company Micro-soft was formed, which
was an abbreviation of microcomputer software.

success of Microsoft began with the MS-DOS
computer operating system that Gates licensed to

Microsoft Windows on November 20, 1985

world at $12.4 billion.

 Being the richest man in the world has also enabled
Gates to create one of the world's largest charitable
foundations in 2000, The Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation, after merging the "Gates Learning
Foundation" and "William H. Gates Foundation".
 BillGates continues to play a very active role in the
workings of the Microsoft Company, but has
handed the position of CEO over to Steve Ballmer.
Gates now holds the positions of "Chairman" and
"Chief Software Architect".

 In March 2005 William H. Gates was bestowed with


the KBE Order (Knight Commander of the Most
Excellent Order of the British Empire) for his
services in reducing poverty and improving health
in the developing countries of the world.

 TheKBE Order of the British Empire is the second


highest Order given out, but it is only an honorary
knighthood

Bono as the Persons of the Year for their humanitarian efforts.

software industry also came many criticisms

 Many of the largest technology companies


have fought legally against the actions of
Microsoft, including Apple Computer,
Netscape, Opera, WordPerfect, and sun
Microsystems

become as rich as Bill Gates is now.

richest country on earth.
