Converter Circuits

Properties of Converter Circuits:

1. High Pulse Number (p)
2. PIV/Vdo should as low as possible (VUF)
3. Vdo/E should be as high as possible
4. Transformation utilization factor (TUF) should be near to
unity.

 Pulse Number:
𝐵𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐷𝐶 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑟𝑖𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑒
Pulse Number=𝐹𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐴𝐶 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒
 Also Pulse Number defined as (p)=q*r*s
where q= Commutation group or group of valves
r= Parallel connected valves
s= Series connected valves

 Transformer Utilization Factor(TUF):

𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑒𝑟 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑛 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑣𝑒 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒

TUF=
𝐷𝐶 𝑂𝑢𝑡𝑝𝑢𝑡 𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟
Different Converter Configurations:
 Consider Pulse Number as P=6
 The generalized formula for maximum DC voltage across the
converter is
𝑞 π/𝑞
Vdo=s. ‫׬‬−π/𝑞 𝐸𝑚𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑤𝑡 𝑑𝑤𝑡

𝑠𝑞 𝜋
= Em sin ( )
𝜋 𝑞
Peak Inverse voltage (PIV):
Defined as the maximum voltage that appears across the valve
when the valve is not conducting.
 If q is even, PIV=2Em
π
If q is odd, PIV=2Em cos ( )
2𝑞
𝐼𝑑
 The current rating of a valve is given by (Iv)=
𝑟√𝑞
where Id=DC current
 The transformer rating on the valve side is
𝐸𝑚
Stv= p. Iv
√2
 DC output power=VdoId
