• The vulture and the little girl is a photograph
by Kevin Carter which first appeared in The New York
Times on 26 March 1993.
• It is a photograph of a frail famine-stricken girl
collapsed in the foreground with a vulture eyeing her
from nearby.
• She was reported to be attempting to reach a United
Nations feeding center in Ayod, South
Sudan sometime in March 1993. The picture won
the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography award in
1994 and was chosen as Picture of the Year by The
American Magazine.

to tell stories, a photojournalist will use their
camera to capture the visual
representation of a story.

6. What is a camera?
• camera obscura, which means "dark
chamber”
• The functioning of the camera is very similar
to the functioning of the human eye.
• The first permanent photograph of a camera
image was made in 1826 by Joseph Nicephore
Niepce
7. What are camera accessories?
Accessories for cameras are mainly for care, protection, special effects and functions.
1. Lens hood: used on the end of a lens to block the sun or other light source to prevent glare
and lens flare
2. Lens cap: covers and protects the lens during storage.
3. Lens adapter: sometimes called a step-ring, adapts the lens to other size filters.
4. Lens filters: allow artificial colors or change light density.
5. Lens extension tubes allow close focus in macro photography.
6. Flash equipment including light diffuser, mount and stand, reflector, soft box, trigger and
cord.
7. Large Format Cameras use special equipment which includes magnifier loupe, view finder,
angle finder, focusing rail /truck.
8. Battery and sometimes a charger.
9. Some professional SLR could be provided with interchangeable finders for eye-level or waist-
level focusing, focusing screens, eye-cup, data backs, motor-drives for film transportation or
external battery packs.
10. Tripod, microscope adapter, cable release, electric wire release.

• A point-and-shoot camera, also known as
compact camera, is a still camera designed
primarily for simple operation
• A digital single-lens reflex camera (also called
a digital SLR or DSLR) is a digital camera that
combines the optics and the mechanisms of
a single-lens reflex camera with a digital
imaging sensor, as opposed to photographic
film
10. How to write a caption?
1. Check the facts – accuracy
2. Captions should add new information.
3. Always identify the main people in the
photograph.
4. A photograph captures a moment in time.
5. Conversational language works best.
6. The tone of the caption should match the
tone of the image.
A caption should help explain the what, when,
and where. But the photo should provoke an
emotional reaction
