Mrs Shalini Mohan Jackson Peter
Asst. Professor S7 civil

INTRODUCTION:-
 Timber-Concrete Composite - focuses on
optimizing performance and material
requirements by engineering a structural
connection between timber and concrete
components.

Structural efficiency is gained by creating

composite action between the two materials.

Less susceptible to vibration

COMPONENTS OF TCC
Timber panels
Connectors
Reinforcement bars
Concrete

TIMBER PANELS
TYPES OF TIMBER PANEL

1.Cross Laminated Timber(CLT):-

It consists of crosswise glued layers of timber
boards
Layering crosswise brings advantages in terms of
load bearing capacity

2. Nail Laminated Timber (NLT):-

Which can be used for floor, wall, and roof

structures.
 Can be used as a substitute for slabs
 Create a unique aesthetic

3.Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL):-

LSL panels are made by shredding wood

 Standard available width 4ft
LSL panels provide a unique architectural
aesthetic

4.Glue Laminated Timber(GLT):-

Used for floor and walls

Also used in timber elevators, stair shafts etc
Two panels are connected by mechanical steel
fasteners

CONNECTORS
 Important component of timber concrete
composite
 Selection of connectors is a critical one
Types of connectors used are:-
Nail
SFS Screw
Insa Hilti
Lag Screw
Reinforcement Bar

TIMBER CONCRETE COMPOSITE 10

Types of connectors:-

1.Nails

 Simplest type
Increases load carrying
capacity
Decreases deflection

TIMBER CONCRETE COMPOSITE 11

2. SFS-screw

TIMBER CONCRETE COMPOSITE 12

3. Insa Hilti
Specifically for using TCC.
Less time needed, no problem of shearing
Used in floors
Cartridge powered pistol

4. Lag screws
Lag screws can function as shear connectors in
timber-concrete composite floors
Failure was initiated by yielding of the screws,.

Lag screws

REINFORCEMENT BARS
Can also be used as a shear connector
Commonly preferred dia-12mm,16mm

Section of reinforcement bar

TIMBER-CONCRETE CONNECTIONS
Based on their different characteristics

Screws
Notches
Grooves

TIMBER CONCRETE COMPOSITE 16

Screws:-
Ductile behavior
Simple application
One carries tension and other compression

Type timber-concrete connection

TIMBER CONCRETE COMPOSITE 17

Parallel connection
TIMBER CONCRETE COMPOSITE 18
Notches:-
Stiffer
Less ductile behavior than screw
Wood based product- avoiding deformation in
contact area

Notch type timber-concrete connection

TIMBER CONCRETE COMPOSITE
19
Grooves:-
Indentation done along panel width
Mechanical properties was less than notch connection
For both notch and groove mechanical fasteners are
provides to carry uplift force

Groove type timber-concrete connection

3.Quiaios bridge

TIMBER CONCRETE COMPOSITE 26

Quiaios bridge:-

Portugal
2005
15m length and 13.5m span
Connecting system is inclined bars and notches

ADVANTAGES OF TIMBER CONCRETE
TCC reduce cross sections, increase spans etc….
Increase aesthetic beauty
Light in weight as compared to a standard concrete deck
 Best tool in retrofitting and strengthening of existing structure
Concrete slab-increases overall stiffness, reduce floor vibrations
timber beam- provide resistance, reduce weight
TCC section increases the thermal mass.
Better acoustic effect
Economical
TIMBER CONCRETE COMPOSITE 29
DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER
CONCRETE
Changes in climatic condition affect worsly
Prone to a biotic forces
Shrinkage and swelling in timber

TIMBER CONCRETE COMPOSITE 30

CONCLUSIONS
The performance of unprotected timber-concrete composite
floors when subjected to fire is excellent.
The benefits in aesthetics, sustainability and economical
savings due to fast erection time will undoubtedly be a

significant factor to their widespread use in the future.

Those light and stiff composite floors can be achieved when
using SFS-screws as connectors.
