Preposition

A preposition connects a noun


to other words in the sentence and
shows relationship between them.
Preposition of place

Indicate the location of objects.


in on
under around
near beneath
below
in

The man is in the taxi

The ball is on the table

The lamp is on the table

The man is on the horse

The dog is under the table

Again, prepositions of place differ adverbs of location.
A preposition always has a noun after it.

ADVERB: Sarah moved on


Preposition: I placed the book on the table

ADVERB: He lives near.


Prepositions: He stays near the gas station.

Preposition of time

There are three common prepositions


of time: at, in, and on, and each
has different use.
At
-used to indicate an exact time
Examples:

• at 1 o’clock • at dawn
• at noon • at sunset
• at night
• at the moment
In
-used to indicate months, years,
centuries and long periods

Examples:
in March in the past
in Summer in the future
in 2019
in the 21 century

-used to indicate days and
dates
Examples:
• on Saturday • on your birthday
• on March 6 • on Mondays
• on July 12, 1984

-used to indicate a period of
time
Examples:
• for six years
• for two hours

-used to indicate length of

• until noon
• until Thursday

-used to indicate an event of
time
Examples:
• during Christmas

• during Birthday
since
-used to indicate a period
Examples:
• since yesterday
• since 1986

Some prepositions like through, along,
toward, past, by, into, to and inside
show direction and movement.

To, into, and toward are used


to show movement towards
something or someone.
EXAMPLES:

• He walked to the park.


• Mom slepped into the
bathtub.
• The waves moved toward the
shore
Inside
refers to movement towards an inner
part of a space..

Example:
He went inside his room.
Through
refers to movement within a space..

Example:
We passed through the
cemetery.
Along
is used to refer to movement
following a line.

Example:
We walked along the walls.
Past and by
Indicate movement going close to and
the going beyond something or
somewhere.
Examples:
• They did not see the sign so
they drove past the
restaurant.
• The swans flew right by our
window.
