DESETTLING BASIN

3/22/2019 7
FORBAY

 Temporary water storage

 Prevent debris from

entering to penstocks

 Acts as a surge tank for

low heads

3/22/2019 8
TURBINE

3/22/2019 9
Francis turbine
 Two sets of 7.6 MW hydraulic turbine
 Each turbine complete with governor, inlet valve, pressure oil supply system
,spiral casing, runner , guide vanes, etc.
 Guided fully under electronic control.

Turbine generator coupled system

3/22/2019 11
Governing mechanism

 Modi-Khola power plant has an Electronic governor

 Governor controls the input power by controlling the guide
vanes of Francis turbine
 As the load on turbine changes governor comes in action
 To maintain frequency constant of electric supply system
 A digital electronic governor was recently installed

3/22/2019 12
Erosion in turbines
 Sediment erosions in hydro turbines.
 Caused due to dynamic action of sediment flowing along with water
 Reduces efficiency and life hence causes economic losses

3/22/2019 13
Remedies

 Withdrawal of clean water from river for power production

 Better design in construction and operation of settling basins

3/22/2019 14
Cooling system is provided for
following generating equipments:

 Generators
 Upper generator bearing
 Lower generator guide bearing
 Turbine guide bearing
 Governor oil
 Compressor
 Turbine shaft

3/22/2019 15
Cooling system

Two types:
 Open loop cooling system
 Close loop cooling system

3/22/2019 16
Open loop cooling system:

In this cooling system there are two provisions.

Water from penstock is utilized for cooling.
Water from guide vane is utilized by using pumping motors
Finally water is discharged to tailrace.

3/22/2019 17
Closed Loop cooling system
Pure water and oil with separate pipes run with valves and used to cool the
equipment.
Water at closed loop system is cooled at heat exchanger with water of open loop
system.

3/22/2019 18
Generating Unit

It has 2 synchronous generators.

Only one was in working condition.
Rated capacity: 7.4 MW each.
Output voltage: 6.6KV
Brushless exciter is implemented.

3/22/2019 19
Excitation System

Need of Excitation System

Control of voltage and reactive
Power flow
Type of Excitation
Excitation used in Modi HPP is
Brushless Excitation

3/22/2019 20
Brushless Excitation system

3/22/2019 21
Specification of Excitation System

Manufacturer: ACEB, France

Mode of operation: Automatic/Manual
Rotator Rectifier: Silicon diode
Number of diode: 6
Voltage Ratio of PT: 6600/140
Rated Voltage: 64V DC
Rated Current: 792 A

3/22/2019 22
Control system

Conventional manual
control with analog
control panel.
The control parameters
are controlled rotating the
control knobs
The sensors used in plant
were by-passed to prevent
frequent tripping.

3/22/2019 23
Control system

Few PLC were used in electronic governor and AVR

PLC & SCADA system is suggested.

3/22/2019 24
Communication control system

Has its own system to communicate with LDC using power

line using Flash Trap or CVT.
In CVT, high frequency signals operates on faulty and load
changing condition.
Optical fibre installed newly.

Lightning Arrestor/ Disconnecting
switches
There are 3 lightning arrestors used
in
• Transmission Line feeder.
• Two sets of LA are used for two
sets of power Transformers.
Disconnecting switches
• 4 sets of EM locking type in
switchyard ,
• 2 sets for Power transformer ,1 in
feeder side of 132KV bus.
• These all disconnecting switches
are remote control as well.
