    Decompression sickness is caused by bubbles of inert gas forming in the body when a diver ascends too quickly from a pressurized environment. As the ambient pressure decreases during ascent, dissolved gases like nitrogen come out of solution in tissues and form bubbles in the bloodstream and tissues due to decreased solubility, which can damage tissues and block blood flow. Rapid decompression allows less time for inert gases to be safely eliminated from the body during ascent.
