ABSTRACT
 A bundle of electrical conductors used for carrying electricity is called as a
cable. An underground cable generally has one are more conductors covered
with suitable insulation and a protective cover.
 While a fault occurs for some reasons, at the time the repeating process related
to that particular cable is difficult due to not knowing the exact location of the
cable fault.
 The objective of this project is to determine the distance of underground cable
fault from base station in kilometres.
 The information which is displayed on LCD screen & it will also sent a
message to mobile by using wifi module.

INTRODUCTION
 In earlier days it was very difficult to find the exact location of the fault in underground cable.
To overcome this problem we have designed a project is to find the exact location of the fault
of both open and closed circuit. The project uses the standard concept of Ohms law i.e., when
a low DC voltage is applied at the feeder end through a series resistor (Cable lines), then
current would vary depending upon the location of fault in the cable.

 The project is assembled with a set of resistors representing cable length in KM’s and fault
creation is made by a set of switches at every known KM to cross check the accuracy of the
same. The fault occurring at a particular distance and the respective phase is displayed on a
LCD interfaced to the Arduino board.

 The information which is displayed on lcd screen will be sent as a message to to mobile by
using gsm module.

FAULT SWITCHES
SUPPLY:

• In this project we are using Ac source as input

• An adapter is used to convert and step down the input

voltage (230v Ac) to 5v Dc.

• And that 5v dc is given as input to the arduino

FAULT SWITCHES:

• The purpose of the Fault Switch is to create a deliberate fault

on an under ground cable , responding from a signal given by
the wifi module.

• Here we are using two types of fault switches

• 1 )open circuit fault switches

2)short circuit fault switches

ARDUINO:

• Arduino board designs use a variety of

microprocessors and controllers.
• The boards are equipped with sets of digital and
analog input/output (I/O) pins that may be
interfaced to various expansion boards
or breadboards
• The boards feature serial communications
interfaces, including Universal Serial Bus (USB)
on some models, which are also used for loading
programs from personal computers.
LCD:

• LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen is an

electronic display module and find a wide

range of applications.

• A 16x2 LCD display is very basic module

and is very commonly used in various
devices and circuits
WIFI MODULE:
• The WiFi Module is a self contained SOC with
integrated TCP/IP protocol stack that can give
any microcontroller access to
your WiFi network.

• The wifi module is capable of either hosting an

application or offloading all Wi-Fi networking

functions from another application processor.

BUZZER:

• A buzzer or beeper is
an audio signalling device, Typical
uses of buzzers and beepers
include alarm devices, timers, and
confirmation of user input such as a
mouse click or keystroke.
