What is Automatic number plate recognition?
• Automatic number plate recognition is a
technology that uses optical character
recognition on images to read vehicle registration
plates to create vehicle location data. It can use
existing closed-circuit television, road-rule
enforcement cameras, or cameras specifically
designed for the task.
Why is it required?
There are already many technologies existing on Automatic number plate
recognition but the observed plate images are in low resolution and suffer severe
loss of edge data due to which various tests and recognition patterns need to be
performed to existing vehicle number plate detection . The process has to be
precise, when there are various vehicles going in a brief span. Number plate
abstraction gets difficult because of number arrangement and other environmental
factors. This step influences the accuracy of character separation.
How?
The process is divided broadly into 3 segments:
• Character segmentation
• Optical character recognition
• Template matching
Gabor filtering is used for character
recognition in gray scale image.
