Neerja Bhanot was born on September 7 1963 in
Chandigarh, India; the daughter of Rama Bhanot and Harish
Bhanot, a Mumbai-based journalist.
She was 3rd child daughter after 2 sons, Akhil and Aneesh
Bhanot had an arranged marriage in March 1985 and joined
her husband in the gulf.

5th of September, 1986
On September 5, 1986 Neerja, her crew and the
400 American and Indian Passengers were
boarding Pan Am flight 73 from Mumbai.

Neerja was the head purser(Flight attendant).

Neerja Alerted the cockprit

crew who evacuated the plane.
 Being the senior most staff on
the hijacked aircraft, she took
charge.

Terrorists
then instructed Bhanot to collect the
passports of all the passengers so that they
could identify Americans.
After 17 hours, the hijackers opened fire and set
off explosives.

Bhanot opened the emergency

door allowing all passengers
to escape.

She could have jumped but

she decided not to and saved
three children from a hail of
bullets.
Neerja was a purser for Pan AM, based in Mumbai,
India, who was murdered while saving passengers
from terrorists on board the hijacked Pan AM Flight
73 on 5th September 1986, she became the
youngest recipient of India’s highest peacetime
military award for bravery, the Ashok Chakra.
