architecture.
It is situated between 59th street and 110 street in
the heart of New York city.

The site is rectangular in shape .

The site measures 6 miles x 2.5

• The site is surrounded by buildings like
Guggen Heim Museum on upper East
side
• Frick college on middle of Nat- History
stands on west side.
• Early in 1858 the Board of Commissioners
launched a competition Olmsted was given the
title Architect-in-Chief of Central Park, and Vaux
was appointed Consulting Architect

• Central Park is located on 843 acres of land the park,
with a perimeter of 9.8km on the north to the south
on the west to the east by 4km
In 1850, the land was occupied by free blacks and Irish
immigrants Before the construction of the park could start,
the area had to be cleared of its inhabitants. The area was
treeless, rocky terrain. The park was established in 1858 on
843 acres (315 ha) of land acquired by the city.

Olmsted and Vaux won the design competition with
their “Greensward Plan,” the last of thirty-two to be
submitted. Two elements distinguished the Greensward
design from those of their competitors
