Piers
• A pier is a raised structure in a body of water,
typically supported by well-spaced piles or
pillars.
Types of Pier

• Working Pier

WORKING PIER

• Working piers were built for the handling of


passengers and cargo onto and off ships or
canal boats.
Pleasure Pier

• The pleasure pier was the resorts' answer,


permitting holidaymakers to promenade over
and alongside the sea at all times.
Fishing Pier

• Many piers are built for the purpose of


providing boatless anglers access to fishing
grounds that are otherwise inaccessible.
Breakwater Wharves
• Breakwaters reduce the intensity of wave
action in inshore waters and thereby reduce
coastal erosion or provide safe harbourage.

Jetties
• A jetty is a long, narrow structure that
protects a coastline from the currents and
tides. Jetties are usually made of wood, earth,
stone, or concrete. They stretch from the
shore into the water.
