base

Defines the exponential function with base b . The domain is the set
of all real numbers, while the range is the set of all positive real
numbers

( y > 0). Note y cannot equal to zero.

LET’S EXERCISE OUR BRAIN CELLS
THROUGH ANSWERING REAL LIFE
SITUATION PROBLEM 
PROBLEM

• Suppose you received a penny on the first day of

December, two pennies on the second day of December,
four pennies on the third day, eight pennies on the fourth
day and so on. How many pennies would you receive on
December 31 if this pattern continues?

EXPONENTIAL

FUNCTION GROWS
EXTREMELY RAPIDLY. IN THIS CASE,
THE EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION f ( x)  2 x
GRAPH
The domain of exponential functions is all real numbers. The range is all real
numbers greater than zero. The line y = 0 is a horizontal asymptote for all
exponential functions. When a > 1: as x increases, the exponential function
increases, and as x decreases, the function decreases. On the other hand, when
0 < a < 1: as x increases, the function decreases, and as x decreases, the function
increases

%: The graphs of y = 2x
and y = 2-x.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GRAPHS OF
WHERE B> 1
• All graphs will approach the x-axis as x gets large.
• All graphs will pass through (0,1) (y-intercept)
• There are no x – intercepts.
• Domain is all real numbers
• Range is all positive real numbers.
• The graph is always increasing on its domain.
• All graphs are continuous curves.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GRAPHS OF
WHERE 0 < B < 1
• All graphs will approach the x-axis as x gets large.
• All graphs will pass through (0,1) (y-intercept)
• There are no x – intercepts.

• The graph is always decreasing on its domain.
• All graphs are continuous curves.
GRAPH
• A simple exponential function like f(x)=2x has as its domain the whole
real line. But its range is only the positive real
numbers, y>0:f(x) never takes a negative value. Furthermore, it never
actually reaches 00 , though it approaches asymptotically as goes
to −∞−∞
