HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF
BANKING IN PAKISTAN
‡ According to various books there were 3106 branches of Indian scheduled
banks in the undivided sub continent as on 1 March 1947 out of which only
487 branches were located in areas presently constituting Pakistan.

‡ At the time of partition there were only two banks having the honor to be
the first commercial banks of Pakistan , namely Habib Bank Ltd , which
was set up in 1941 with its Head Office in India and the Australasia bank
Ltd, which was established in 1944 with its Head office in Pakistan.

‡ Thus the history of Banking system in Pakistan started with the


establishment of the state Bank of Pakistan which was inaugurated by
Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah on 1 July 1948.

‡ Consequently three Banks were established which include Muslim


commercial Bank Ltd. Bank of Bahawalpur in October 1948 and National
Bank of Pakistan in 1949.

‡ National Bank of Pakistan (the Bank) was established on
November 9, 1949 under the National bank of Pakistan
Ordinance, in order to cope with the crisis conditions which
were developed after trade deadlock with India and
devaluation of India Rupee in 1949.Initially the Bank was
established with the objective to extend credit to agriculture
sector.

‡ The Bank commenced its operations from November 20,1949 at


six important jute centers . The Bank·s Karachi and Lahore
offices were subsequently opened in December 1949.The Bank
acts as the agent to the State Bank of Pakistan for handling
Provincial/Federal Government Receipts and Payments on
their behalf.

Pakistan's premier bank determined to set higher standards of
achievements.

‡ It is the major business partner for the Government of


Pakistan with special emphasis on fostering Pakistan's
economic growth through aggressive and balanced lending
policies, technologically oriented products and services offered
through its large network of branches locally, internationally
and representative offices.

management , Brokerage ,leasing and discounting services.

‡ Holding company is listed at all the stock exchanges in


Pakistan.

‡ Under a Trust Deed , the holding company also provides


services as trustee to NIT including safe custody of securities
on behalf of NIT.

‡ NBP also have a Joint Venture with UBL at U.K., with the name
of Pakistan International Bank (UK) Ltd., with seven branches
at Main Branch, London, Manchester Branch, Glasgow Branch,
Bradford Branch, Sheffield Branch, Birmingham Branch and
Knightsbridge Branch (London)
‡ NBP operates 1243(2007:1232)branches in
Pakistan and 22(2007:18) overseas
branches.

Objectives are essential for organizational success because this
start direction, aid in evaluation, create synergy, reveal
priorities, focus coordination and provide basis for effective
planning, motivating and controlling, activities.

‡ According to official record the bank has the following


objectives:

1. To modernize the commercial banking operation.


2. To improve the service for its customers.
3. To expand the international financial operation.
4. To spread the joint venture involving foreign investment,
overseas Pakistanis, and local businessmen.
5. To increase the cooperation with the Middle Eastern banks
and exchange companies.
