ASTM STANDARD

DETAIL PROCEDURE
EXPERIMENT
MEASURING LENGTH OF
CONCRETE CORES
DESIGNATION

C 1542/C 1542M – 02
SCOPE

This test method covers

“MEASUREMENT OF CONCRETE CORES DRILLED
OUT FROM CONCRETE STRUCTURE IN ORDER
TO MEASURE DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES”
SIGNIFICANCE & USE
PROVIDE TWO PROCEDURES FOR DETERMINING LENGTH OF CORES
FURTHER THIS LENGTH IS USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH
1. Length to diameter relationship
2. Density and Void analysis
3. Cement Content Analysis
4. Condition Surveys
and other applications.
APPARATUS
JAW CALLIPER [Accuracy to 0.03mm(0.001in)]
APPARATUS
RULER [Accuracy up to 1mm(0.1in)]
PROCEDURE
Using JAW CALIPER
Place the open jaws of the caliper midpoint between
the center and edge of the specimen.
Measure and record the value nearest to
0.25mm(0.01in).
Rotate the specimen 90°, 180°, and 270° and repeat
it.
PROCEDURE
Using RULER
Hold core with finished surface placed down
against level surface.
Place ruler on Flat surface along side core and
measure length nearest to 1mm(0.1in)
Rotate at 90°, 180°, and 270° & repeat
measurements.

PRECAUTIONS
Make sure the instrument is clean and make sure it
works.
Check for zero error & apply corrections.
Check for Parallax error (error due to wrong
positioning of eye).
Observe reading correctly and report it to nearest to
1mm.
REMARKS

The length of concrete cores approximately ranges

from 64 to 117mm (2.5 to 4.6 in)
