Aim: How to measure the mass

of a mole of a substance?
Do Now: Challenge Questions
1. How many chlorine atoms are in 2 moles of MgCl2?
Mole Demonstration….
• This picture shows one mole of various
substances. Does there seem to be the
same mass of each substance? Why or
why not? Discuss this question with the
person next to you and write your
answer in your notebook.
• Answer: The number of particles in each
same is the same (6.02 x 1023 particles).
But the masses are different. The mass
of one mole of a substance is called its
molar mass; it depends on the chemical
formula of the substance.
Based on the reading….
1. Define molar mass.

2. Determine the molar mass of CH4.

Molar Mass or Gram Formula Mass(gfm)
• The mass of a mole (1 mole) of any substance is called its
molar mass.
• Molar mass is the atomic mass of an element expressed in
grams. Unit = g/mol
• Ex: The molar mass for carbon is 12.0 g. In other words, 1
moles of carbon has a mass of 12.0 g.
Molar Mass
• The mass of an atom in amu (atomic mass unit) is also equal to the
mass in grams of one mole of an element.
Element Atomic mass Molar mass Number of
unit atoms
H 1.01 amu 1.01 g/mol 6.02 x 10 23
Mg 24.31 amu 24.31 g/mol 6.02 x 1023
Na 22.99 amu 22.99 g/mol 6.02 x 1023
The Mass of One Mole of Various Substances
Molar Mass of Compound
• To calculate the molar mass of a compound, find the
number of grams of each element in one mole of the
compound. Then add the masses of the elements in
the compound.

Summary
1.What is the mass of 1 mole of H2SO4?
2.What is the molar mass of NO2?
3.What is the mass of 2 moles of NO2?
Aim: How to convert from mass to moles and
vice versa
Do Now: Do questions 1-6 on the top of the worksheet.
The Mole- Mass Relationship
• The molar mass of a substance can be used as a
conversion factor for converting molesmass.
• When doing mole  mass conversions, the
first step is to find the molar mass (gram formula
mass) of the substance
Example of molar mass as a conversion factor
• The molar mass of NaCl is 58.4 g/mol
• In other words, one mole of NaCl is equal to 58.4 grams
• 1 mol NaCl = 58.4 g NaCl

• This relationship can be written as two conversion factors

58.4 𝑔 𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙 1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙

or
1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙 58.4 𝑔 𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙
