Exponential Decay
Exponential Decay
DECAY
GROUP 1
WHAT IS
EXPONENTIAL
DECAY?
Exponential decay is used
to model such things as
radioactive decay, and is
the opposite of exponential
growth
When a population or group of something
is declining, and the amount that
decreases is proportional to the size
of the population, it's
called exponential decay. In
exponential decay, the total value
decreases but the proportion that
leaves remains constant over time.
The exponential decay formula is
useful in a variety of real world
applications, most notably for
tracking inventory that's used
regularly in the same quantity
(like food for a school cafeteria)
and it is especially useful in its
ability to quickly assess the long-
term cost of use of a product over
time.
In mathematics, exponential decay
describes the process of reducing an
amount by a consistent percentage rate
over a period of time and can be
expressed by the formula:
y=a(1-b)x
wherein y is the final amount
a is the original amount
b is the decay factor
x is the amount of time that has passed.
DIFFERENT EXPONENTIAL DECAY
FORMULAS:
y = a(1 - r)x
a = initial value (the amount before measuring
growth or decay)
r = growth or decay rate (most often represented
as a percentage and expressed as a decimal)
x = number of time intervals that have passed
Note: that the variables may change from one
problem to another, or from one context to
another, but that the structure of the equation is
always the same. For instance, all of the
following represent the same relationship:
A = Pert or A = Pekt or
Q = Nekt or Q = Q0ekt
