If So……

Congratulations!

You’ve given an Impromptu Talk!

2
Now, a Challenge???
Today, we’ll move from giving an
informal impromptu talk to a formal,
structured impromptu speech where
we draw a topic and prepare a 2-3
minute speech in 5 minutes.

3
Why Give an Impromptu Speech?

To help hone our speaking skills in everyday

life situations when we have little
preparation time.

We will become more productive oral

communicators by immediately using
listening and speaking skills.

Write a Story

Model:
I was in our kitchen. It was 9:00 PM. My Mom

spelled out, “Will you go to prom with me?”
I ran outside and screamed, “YES!”

Model:

“What are you doing on May 25?”

I asked my girlfriend.

Why? she said.

Then, I said, “Will you go to Prom with

me?”
She screamed, “Yes!”

Begin with a Quotation
Quotation Method

once said,

the smile is the beginning of love.”

For me, the smile when my girlfriend said yes to

the Prom was the beginning of love.
11
Begin with a Creative Method
Creative Method-Grabs the attention of the
listener, but is not a story, rhetorical question, or
a quotation.

Creative Method Example

P-R-O-M What does that spell?
PROM! Yeah!
I know. I’m crazy, but doesn’t the PROM
sometimes drive us CRAZY?
