ANCHOR:
• An anchor is a device, normally made of
metal, used to connect a vessel to
the bed of a body of water to prevent the
craft from drifting due to wind or current.
• Anchors can either be temporary or
permanent. Permanent anchors are used in
the creation of a mooring, and are rarely
moved; a specialist service is normally
needed to move or maintain them. Vessels
carry one or more temporary anchors,
which may be of different designs and
weights.

NUMBER OF ANCHORS CARRIED IN
SHIPS
• Most ships have two anchors, one on the port bow and
one on the starboard bow. The resons for this are:
• Depending on the current and wind direction the
vessel may have a tendency to fall off course to one
side of the other and trip over chain and do damage to
the bow (particularly if the ship is equipped with a
bulbous bow) .
• An anchor is considered essential safety equipment…
and most safety systems aboard ship are required to be
redundant (i.e. have two independent systems).
NUMBER OF ANCHORS CARRIED IN
SHIPS
• If the brake fails when setting the anchor you could possibly
loose it. You could also potentially entangle an anchor
around an obstruction on the sea floor. In this case it’s a
good idea to have a spare.
• Some docking situations (Lookup “Med Mooring”) require
the use of anchors and one side maybe proffered.
• Few ships carry a third “spare” anchor because anchors are
very large and heavy and would be very difficult to replace
at sea.
• Very few ships have a third anchor mounted at the stern…
which they may use for some special operations or special
docking situation.
