Introduction

 A jack is a mechanical device which is used to lift

heavy loads or apply great forces.

 A mechanical jack employs a screw thread for lifting

heavy equipment.

 A hydraulic jack uses hydraulic power.

 A hydraulic jack is based on Pascal’s Principle.

3
Aim and Objectives

 To design a motorized hydraulic jack to lift the

vehicle with the help of electric motor.

 To design a motorized hydraulic jack with the least

amount of components with low cost.

 To fabricate a motorized hydraulic jack with low cost

and high efficiency.

4
Implementation Program
 Studying the different types of hydraulic jack.

 Studying about the working principle of motorized

hydraulic jack.

 Studying the proper method to calculate the motorized

hydraulic jack.

 Designing and fabricating a motorized hydraulic jack.

 Giving conclusions on reliability of hydraulic jack with

electric motor. 5
Scope of Thesis

 This Thesis will build a prototype of motorized

hydraulic jack with 5 ton maximum lifting capacity
that could be used in lifting heavy equipment in
farms, industries and workshops.
 Examine necessary stages involved in the design and
fabrication of motorized hydraulic jack with all
necessary calculations and drawings.

6
Advantages
 No need of human effort.
 Heavy things can lift easily.
 Increases timeliness and efficiency in maintenance
operations.

Disadvantages
 Power is needed.
 The initial cost of hydraulic devices is high.
 The unavailability of this device in every area where
it is needed.
7
Application

 It can be used for lifting a car or other vehicles for

changing its tires and multi-purposes.

 It can be used to lift heavy load in industries.

 It can be used in workshop or by personal usages.

 Chapter Two Types of Hydraulic Jack and

Parts of Hydraulic Jacks

 Chapter Three Motorized Hydraulic Jack

 Chapter Four Design Calculation and

Fabrication Process

 Chapter Five Discussion, Conclusion and

Recommendations 9
Background of Hydraulic Jack

 In 1838 William Joseph Curtis filed a British patent

for a hydraulic jack.

 In 1851, inventor Richard Dudgeon was granted a

patent for a "portable hydraulic press" - the hydraulic
jack, a jack which proved to be vastly superior to the
screw jacks in use at the time.

Hydraulic Bottle Jack

 A bottle jack is a jack which resembles a bottle shape,

having a cylindrical body and a neck.
 A bottle jack have a capacity of up to 50 tons and
may be used to lift a variety of objects, uses include
the repair of automobiles and house foundations.

Floor Jack
 In a floor jack a horizontal piston pushes on the short
end of a bellcrank, with the long ram providing the
vertical motion to a lift pad, kept horizontal with a
horizontal linkage.
 Floor jack uses hydraulic to lower and raise heavy
vehicles such as trucks and cars.

Strand Jack
 A strand jack is a jack used to lift very heavy (e.g.
thousands tons or more with multiple jacks) loads for
construction and engineering purposes.
 Strand jacks can be used horizontally for pulling objects and
structures, and are widely used in the oil and gas industry
for skidded load outs.

Air Hydraulic Jack

 An air hydraulic jack is a hydraulic jack that is actuated by

compressed air - for example, air from a compressor -
instead of human work.

Different Parts of Hydraulic Jack

 Reservoir

 Pump

 Check Valve

 Main Cylinder

 Ram or Piston

 Release Valve

16
Motorized Hydraulic Jack

 A motorized hydraulic jack is a type of jack designed to

incorporate a dc motor and link mechanisms.

Components of Motorized Hydraulic Jack

 Hydraulic Bottle Jack

 DC Motor
 Battery
 Base Plate
 Crank Disk
 Gears
 Bearing
 Shaft
 Connecting Rod
18
Working Principle of Motorized Hydraulic Jack

 Hydraulic jacks uses fluid, which is incompressible,

that is forced into a cylinder by a pump plunger.

 The dc motor is coupled with the hydraulic jack by

gear arrangement with the rotation of the dc motor
determining the lifting speed of the hydraulic jack.

 Gear Design

20
Summary
 Know the applications, advantages and disadvantages
of motorized hydraulic jack.

 Understand different types of hydraulic jack and

working principles of motorized hydraulic jack.

 Study about motorized hydraulic jack and for its

design calculation.

21
Future Plan

 To design calculation for the ram cylinder, plunger

cylinder, lever and gear design.

 To fabricate the motorized hydraulic jack.
