ENERGY EFFICIENT

BUILDING/ GREEN BUILDING

PREPARED BY
SANTOSH BASNET
INTODUCTION

 Energy efficient buildings (new constructions or renovated existing buildings)

can be defined as buildings that are designed to provide a significant
reduction of the energy need for heating and cooling, independently of the
energy and of the equipment's that will be chosen to heat or cool the
building.
 The aim of a energy efficient building /green building is to minimize the
demand on non-renewable resources, maximize the utilization efficiency of
these resources, when in use, and maximize the reuse, recycling, and
utilization of renewable resources.
Why energy efficient building??

 40% of Global Energy Consumption is

building related
 50% of Global Green House emission is due
to Buildings

Objective of green building

 Low impact: Minimize impact on natural environment.

 Energy Efficient: Reduces energy usages and water usages.
 Healthy : protect occupant health and productivity.
 Minimize waste: the reduction in construction material waste by optimizing
building dimensions and recycling.

 Indoor Environmental Quality;
 Conservation of Materials and Resources.
Various energy saving concept in green
building
 Site selection and design: Evaluate site in terms of the location of buildings in
order to optimize the use of passive solar energy, natural day lighting, and natural
breezes and ventilation.
 Orientation :In the northern hemisphere, south facing windows have the greatest
exposure to the sun. West facing windows need to be carefully designed.
 Walls and Roof: Designing the foundation, walls and roofs is to minimize
conductive heat loss/gain while minimizing uncontrolled movement of air into the
building.
 Energy Efficient Appliances: Use of energy efficient and eco-friendly appliance
reduces utility cost.
 Waste reduction: Green architecture also seeks to reduce waste of energy, water
and materials during construction.
 Materials: Use durable products and materials, Use materials made from recycled
products.
Cost comparison

 A Green building costs 3-8% more than the conventional buildings.

 The cost is recovered within two to three years through savings in
maintenance costs.
 The Life Cycle Cost of Energy efficient buildings is lower than that of the
conventional buildings (Source: TERI-GRIHA)
