INTRODUCTION :

•What is campus violence?

Violence is the behaviour involving physical
force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone. It can
also be defined as the strength of emotion or of a
destructive natural force. Such actions inside the
campus premises is termed as campus violence.

•How is someone affected by campus violence?

No human is immune to violence or the effects
of aggressive behaviour. Campus violence doesn’t
only affect the victim; it reverberates throughout all of
their personal and social circles.
STATISTICS :

 12% of global hate crimes happen on

college campuses
 Half of the world’s hate crimes are committed by
men aging between 15 to 25
 16% of college hate crimes are due to sexual
orientation
 57% of ragging cases are due to racism
 20% of torture cases are filed due to religious
differences
 66% of college hate crimes are not reported
REASONS :

 Lack of moral values

 Considering ragging as a form of entertainment
 No stringent action by college authorities
 Frustration for being victims themselves
 Disrespect for the inferior
 Misconception of power
IMPACTS : (PHYSICAL)

 Using physical force resulting in injury and pain

 Harming others to fulfil their personal needs

CASE STUDY 1:
Last August, hundreds of Lucknow University
students went on a rampage injuring a dozen
people, including two teachers and six PAC
constables while smashing over half a dozen
vehicles on campus. Their grouse: a lathi charge on
a student procession, led by a former student union
leader, demanding a roll back of a modest increase
in tuition fees.
IMPACTS : (MENTAL)

• Psychological trauma such as depression

• Suicidal thoughts and deeds

CASE STUDY 2 :
Hyderabad, September 2001, M. Srinadh Reddy (19),
a first year student of Venkateshwara Engineering
College, Hyderabad, committed suicide by throwing
himself before an oncoming train. “This is my last
appeal that seniors should not target juniors in the
name of ragging and destroy their promising lives”, he
said in his suicide note. Later it was found from police
investigation that the victim was mentally tortured by
some seniors for the last two months before his death.
SOLUTIONS :
 Capture incident data
 Check student’s discipline history
 Increase parental involvement
Steps taken by authority against the mentioned case studies:

• Case study 1: Lucknow University vice-chancellor S.B.Singh

was quick to condemn the violence as “politically motivated”
and stated that all the students involved would be expelled and
hence after a prolonged meeting it was done so, with few of
their lobby leaders who were college students.

•Case study 2: Severe steps were not taken against such

crimes as it happened way back before people started mass
protest. Though in recent years, college campuses became
more alert and strong steps are taken against such crimes.
CONCLUSION :

Prevention of campus violence needs to start early, at

basic school level. Exposure makes themselves aware
of their responsibilities and conduct.
However, the number of recent incidents
reported regarding campus violence have reduced
greatly over the last few years. The real question here
is whether campus violence is being overlooked as a
crime or it has actually significantly reduced. Although
strict actions taken against similar incidents in the past
seem to have made people more strong to stand
against the wrong.
