TYPES OF POETRY

(LIMERICK AND HAIKU)

WHAT IS LIMERICK?

• A type of poetry with a strict rhyming pattern in


the form of five lines.
• The first two lines are always longer than the
second two and the fifth line is the same length
as the first two.
•AAB BA
• Usually have a humorous intent.
HISTORY OF LIMERICKS

• Limericks started in the early years of the 18th


century England.
• This style of poetry was made popular
(popularized) in the 19th century by poet and
writer, Edward Lear.
• The Limerick became popular from Edward
Lear’s first book: A Book of Nonsense (1845)

EXAMPLES OF LIMERICKS

There was an old man with a beard, (A)


Who said, It is just as I feared!— (A)
Two owls and a hen, (B)
Four larks and a wren, (B)
Have all built their nests in my beard! (A)
There was a young pig by a cradle (A)
Who was feeding her babe with a ladle. (A)
The broth reached his chin (B)
When she spooned too much in, (B)
So she taught him to swim in that cradle.

WHAT IS HAIKU ?

Type of poetry from the Japanese culture


 Combines form, content, and language in
a meaningful, yet compact form.
HAIKU
• Writes about everyday things
• Many themes include nature, feelings or experiences
• Usually they use simple words and grammar
• The most common form of Haiku is three short lines
• The first line usually contains five syllables, the second line
seven syllables and then third line contains five syllables.
• It does not rhyme
• Must “paint” a mental image in the reader’s mind.
