Circles indicate renal corpuscles consisting

of glomeruli and Bowman’s capsules.
These glomeruli belong to
cortical nephrons.

3
The cortex is a good place to find sections of PCT, DCT, and cortical collecting tubules/ducts
Squirrel Monkey Kidney Medullary Rays and
Renal Corpuscles

The yellow lines roughly demarcate medullary rays. They include collecting tubules/ducts
and straight portions of proximal and distal tubules. A medullary ray and the tubules and
Bowman’s capsules that drain into it constitute a renal lobule.

Beginning of PCT

Why is it rare to see both a urinary pole and a vascular pole in

the same slice of a renal corpuscle? 7

PCT

This micrograph is not from a slide in your collection, but illustrates tubule varieties superbly. Note
dark and light cells in the cortical collecting duct, apical nuclei in the distal collecting tubule and
8
brush border and pinocytotic vesicles in the proximal convoluted tubule. Click to see the labels.

You are not expected to distinguish thin limbs from vasa recta. Collecting ducts 9
have the thickest epithelium of the three.
Use this diagram to learn which
components of the nephron
are found in each part of the kidney

of the inner and outer zones and the inner and outer stripes of the outer zone. Click

D6

D4 and D6 are transverse sections. D6 is

stained with toluidine blue. The asterisks are in the
lumens of the calyces in D3 and D4. When examining
D3 begin at the tip of the papilla and work toward the
capsule. D6 has nice thin/thick descending limb transitions
