History & Growth Time Line

History
IKEA was founded by Ingvar Kamprad in 1943, when he was 17 years old.
IKEA is pronounced "Ikeya". IKEA is an acronym for Ingvar Kamprad, the
name of the founder. Elmtaryd, Agunnaryd, the name of the Ingvar
hometown in Smaland, Sweden. So actually, IKEA is the name and address
of the founder.

Initially, IKEA sold various items, from pens, wallets, photo frames, to
watches. Furniture began in 1948, and IKEA began designing itself in 1956.

The sale of IKEA products was initially carried out in the mail and then a
store opened at Älmhult which later became the IKEA store model for the
next. On March 23, 1963, the first IKEA shop outside Sweden was opened
at Asker, near Oslo, Norway.
